B+H "out of stock" ?

Hello all. I've been lurking on this board for quite a while, but never signed up because, well, I'm not yet a DVX user.

Well, now I'm just days away from investing my $$ on a 100B, and I actually shouldn't have waited this long, for two reasons:

1. May rebate deadline, duh.
2. I'm getting married in 3 weeks, and it would be nice to have the camera by then, just to set on a tripod for the ceremony, nothing fancy.

So anyway, I noticed that a lot of online dealers have multiple "packages," with accessories. In the case of B+H, the camera alone is listed as "out of stock," but one of the packages, with $400 of stuff I don't really want and can't afford right now, is "accepting orders."

What's the deal? I can only buy a DVX if I get a package? Is this a case of the website's listing system misinterpreting the actual inventory of B+H? What does "accepting orders" mean, is it the same as "in stock?"

But my biggest question to you experienced DVXusers is about the general availability of the 100B. Which web outlets have reliable stock? How long should I expect to wait for my new cam? I'm not too worried about price, as it seems that everyone changes about 3499 (before rebate), and I know looking for a real discount price will lead me nowhere.

So, any way I can expect to get a hold of a cam by June 17th? Or should I just order one now for the rebate, but pull out my trusty-but-aging TRV900 for the wedding?

I've purchased from B&H many times and every time I do, I look the item up on the web then call and talk to an actual person to place the order. I'm sure if you call tomorrow during business hours they can ship you a 100B by the next day. Regardless of what the site says, I doubt they are out of stock and the best way to find out is to talk to a salesperson. BH is great to deal with and I have never had problems.

That said, EVS is also great and thats where I got my 100B. I chose them over BH because EVS price with tax was almost a wash with BH next day price w/o tax and at EVS I could walk in and walk out with the cam. Again, they'll have a great price and I'm sure they can ship it out tomorrow if you call early.

Also, you dont have to talk to a mythical "Rush" about the DVXUser discount, and salesperson there will give it to you. "Ramsey" was my sales guy. Cool, knowledgable guy and talked me out of a XL2 and into the 100B. They care about what YOU NEED there, not what the biggest sale is.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm so used to buying stuff over the internet, that I forgot these companies have phone numbers! That's exactly what I will do.

It's very generous to offer any discount at all, but I suppose with all the refurrals they get from the site, everybody wins!

And if I may be so bold, just how deep is the DVXuser discount? $20? $200?

Noble Robot-

If you are a video guy, DON'T go and setup your camera at the back of your wedding to record it. Pay the money and have a professional record it for you. It's one of the best investments you can make in your wedding. There are guys out there who will film the wedding and give you tapes to edit the wedding yourself.

And don't even think about having a friend videotape it. You will get about 5 seconds of good footage and the rest of the video of their feet or the sky.

This is the most important day of your life- at least your fiance's life. You aren't going to be looking a the photographs, you will want to watch the video all the time though.

i went to Abel Cine tech today. My GOD. that place is great. The workers were friendly, and courteous.

I will be giving them my money from now on. If an HVX200 is in my future, it will be purchased through them.

Sorry, this isn't some whim we have. We have a pro photographer, but video is a way minor concern for us. We don't need to pay $2,000 to get some "pro" videopgrapher provide cheesy wipes and awful titleing. We're having a tiny outdoor wedding with just close family and friends. We're having a large reception, but we're not videotaping it. For the ceremony, all we need is a tripod, no kidding. Thanks for the advice, really, but I know what I'm doing.

I think you are referring to the way wedding video was 10 years ago- and yes it was awful and cheesey just like you said. If you look at most of the videographers around now, you will find some of the most amazing movies you have seen.

I know how you feel... I was there myself. I was not in the videography business at the time and I had setup a tripod and had some friends tape with their camcorders for me. What a mistake. My wife and I never look at the photographs, which we paid $10,000 for, but we are always looking at the crappy ass footage my friends shot for us and remembering the day. Not hiring a pro was the biggest mistake of my life.

Don't think I'm here soliciting you to get my service either- I am a high end videographer who gets booked a year in advance. I'm here as a fellow video enthusiast telling you that you are about to make a big mistake. Get a loan from the parents, or don't buy that new DVX. Spend that money on a pro to shoot it for you and then you can edit your wedding so you don't have those "cheesey effects" in it.

The cam isn't for the wedding. I'm a filmmaker and video pro like so many others on this board.

My sister is also getting married, at the end of the summer, and she's looking a a bunch of "demo DVDs" for videographers. After looking at them, I asked her why she wasn't looking at the expensive services, and she said that she was!

I don't mean to knock your profession, honestly, but after helping my sister shop around, I 'm suprised how little there is to it. And I've had my fill of videographers who are "around now," and they're still pretty cheesy. I will admit, however, that my opinion is colored by the fact that both my fiance and I think weddings are cheesy to begin with :-)

Listen, if I really cared, I'd fine someone who wasn't terrible, dump a bunch of money on them, and do it right. But I don't know anyone who even watches their wedding video (whether they paid for it or not), but everyone's shown me their wedding photos.
