Monaco Grand Prix with the HVX200

Considering I had less than 2 weeks to prepare for my shoot at the Monaco Grand Prix, I am reasonably impressed with the results. I had 2 4GB P2 cards and the FS100 as well, but despite that the shoot was a bit problematic.
Monaco is a tight circuit, a press credential lets you get anywhere that you are crazy enough to stand. I didn't really like the fact that I had to futz around with the FS 100 and P2 cards in between sessions. I shot in 1080 30p mode most of the time so the space on the cards was limited to 8 minutes and the FS 100 was pretty good however there were connection problems when I was moving around a lot. At times, the P2 cards wouldn't transfer over to my Powerbook fast enough so I had to fall back onto the FS 100 get the shots when the sessions started. But the results speak for themselves, the grand prix cars in High Def look fantastic and I complied a quick little reel for you all to see.

Hey, Boulder, isn't Monaco GP this weekend???

And how did you edit 720p footage on a Mac???

Those look like GP 2 cars not F1, the race is this weekend, CBS will be covering it. MUCH better than those crappy Indy cars that go in circles...YUK!!

No no, not GP2 either. These are Formula One cars circa 1970-1978. The Monaco Historique is the weekend before the GP weekend. I have been there for both and by far the better weekend is the historic one... when racing was dangerous and sex was safe.

Wow How cool, Historic F1 cars are beautiful ! Are the drivers old guys from the day or just rich guys from today? I am so jealous, are you going to shoot the race this weekend ? I'll be stuck watching the awfull coverage on CBS.
Aloha

I'm looking forward to this weekend's GP... Ferrari seems like able to compete with the renaults this time, and the MClaren could prove a Wild Card... How I miss the Senna times, tough... Those were the days...

Glad you guys liked the shots. It was even more amazing to experience the beauty and history right there on the barriers. I am working with a production company that is shooting an HD feature on Historic Grand Prix that hopefully will be distributed worldwide very soon...

what did you use for microphones? the stock HVX mics or some nice shotguns? if so please tell me what kinds.

i'll be shooting the grand prix in san jose, CA in 2 months and need to know what kind of gear you had with you and what else you wished you had on hand.

contentlab - I just bought a shotgun XLR mic that was originaly for my DVX100A. I used one mic that was hot and another one that was lower levels. Car noise seemed to blow out the levels a lot so be careful. I am sure there is a better set-up but this is the one I used...
