Malibu Sunset Footage

Saw some interesting clouds Saturday evening, so a friend and I chased out to Malibu with the HVX. We weren't really planning on doing anything with the footage afterwards in particular, but when we got back, we decided to throw it in a sequence, put a track on it, and do some quick CC. So I thought I would share with you all.

It's 80MB, QT h.264 720p24, all done on the HVX200.

WOW :) some shots in that were breathtaking, imagine if you had of taken a tripod! This camera combined with a little CC continuously amazes me, Great stuff.

Thanks guys for the compliments.

Yeah, I wish I had a stabilization device when I was in the truck, especially since the suspension was pretty bad.

Damn dude.. I'm a cloud lover, I have hundreds of cloud pictures, and sheesh, that was some amazing stuff.. Got a little dizzy at one point, but it was worth the ride.. ;-)

Love the sunset towards the end with the TALL PALMS and saw the colors change a bit (playing with CC?? neat effect!) LOVE THE BLACKS!! Mmmmmm..

Also, the 12fps stuff on the ocean was sweet.. wish u didnt touch the camera!! I could have watched that for 20 min..

720 24pN or 24P?

Good stuff man. I thought that the shots from the truck gave it a kind of raw-ness to it. Makes me want to go to the beach and do some timelapse.

Wow,

I really like that footage. Really good job. And I'm with drew I really like the raw feel about it. It makes me miss home so bad.

What did you do the CC in and what your your settings if you would. I love the blacks they werent crushed and it looked really good. Do share.

Thanks Justin and Drew!

Justin, I shot at 24pN, and that one shot on the ocean that you are refering to, I shot at 8fps using the scene file trick - but I ended up speeding it up to simulate 2fps anyway. (I agree, I shouldn't have touched the camera.) As for the palm tree shot, I did play with the CC on it, good to hear you liked the effect, I thought it might have been a bit too much.

img, I used FCP for everything, and I used the built-in 3 way CC filter. I didn't stay consistent in terms of how I used the CC because the light was changing constantly (going in and out shadow) and well my scene files weren't exactly consistent.. (my timelapse and 24pN had different scene file settings)

For the 24pN stuff, detail was 5+, chroma was 5+, black pedestal was -7, Cinema_D, cinema matrix, and for the timelapse shots, everything was zeroed out and on cinema_D and cinema matrix. While in camera, I set my exposure so that most of the sky wasn't overexposing (zebras set to 105%).

When I was CCing, I'd slam the blacks up just to see what detail was there, and if there wasn't anything there I wanted to see, I just left the levels alone. If there was some detail, I'd raise it up a tad, and then push down the mids to compensate. If it looked odd, I would try adding a bit of color (usually red/orange) to the blacks and/or lowering it back down. I rarely touched the white level. Some of the footage, I pushed really hard, others not at all, but I'm really surprised how well it held up when I pushed it. And with the black pedestal at -7 on many shots, I was really surprised that I got ANY detail pulled back.

Sorry if that isn't the answer you were looking for, I was just kind of playing. :)

Simply some awesome looking clouds. Love the sunset shots at the end. Jerky truck and cam kind of went against the music a bit for me... and if it were steady and smooth you'd have one hell of an enya vid..

Good work all around though. Man looks sweet in Cali with the smog and the sun and the run and gun HVX, baby...

Love to see more. Got any surfing footage?

Dude, that is a killer video...I actually loved the jerky stuff, and those sunset shots were really amazing. Makes me want to grab my camera and go shoot...

Loved the Moby song too...

Awesome footage man. I'm getting my HVX next week and these shots have me psyched. I loved the sunset shot at the end looking up at the palm trees as the bird soars by.

Great stuff. What was the music you used?

And I loved the color correction. I honestly think that my favorite thing about the HVX200 may be the DVCProHD color depth. I've done extensive color correction with the DVX100A and a bit with the HD100U and I couldn't push them anywhere near as far or see results as beautiful as I'm seeing here. I don't see how anyone could go back to HDV after this.

Thanks guys for the compliments.

No surfing footage yet, Justyn, but I'll definitely have some by the end of the summer.

David, the song was "My Weakness" by Moby.

I've corrected DVX footage too - and it just doesn't compare to the HVX, not even close. Nearly all the correction I did would have made DV25 look just plain awful with artifacts, or certainly given me a lot more trouble. It's comforting to know that I can have a lot more flexibility in post than I was used to with the DVX.
