Any way at all to view MXF footage on computer?

Hello!

My HVX has worked wonders so far, it's just one tiny little thing that annoys me to death: can someone or some company please make an application so that I can view mxf files on my computer (windows PC, not mac)? I cannot afford premiere pro for the moment, so I'm stuck with lots of files and no application to view the files in.

Of course, it's not the end of the world, it's just an immensely annoying problem I didn't see coming.

Thanks!

There is a program called RAYLIGHT which converts HVX to AVI. You can download the demo-it just shows watermark logos all over it.

Preview MXF files with Windows Media Player

Preview MXF files with Windows Media Player

With the P2 Viewer installed you can also use Windows Media Player to view the footage (without audio is the downside.) Double click on an MXF, Windows will ask what program you wish to open the MXF with, select Windows Media Player, make this selection the default. When WMP opens it will say something like it doesn't recognize the extension but it might be able to play it anyway (it can) so check to box so that it doesn't show that warning. Now when you can double click on any P2 video MXF Files and it will instantly play.

Whenever you are ready for editing on your PC. Check out CineForm Connect HD (for Sony Vegas) and Aspect HD for Premiere Pro.

Yes that is true, but I only use WMP for a quick shot review before convert the MXF files to AVIs (while up converft them to square pixel 1280x720 16x9) so that wrong aspect ratio in WMP doesn't bother me.

Oh- I almost forgot this trick I figured out.

If you click on a RAW MXF clip and tell windows to open it with Media Player, it will scream that it doesn't know how- and then voila- will show you the clip.

I thought I would be cool and check the box to "always open" with that file. Yeah- problem is Bill Gates is smarter than me and of course it doesn't know how to open it, so of course it always unchecks the box and you have to open it the same way with 3 extra clicks. It works- it's fastish for previewing clips, but a buggy solution at best. I'm real suprised VLC doesn't open it because it will open ANYTHING. That's probably a codec away.

Because of the PC hassle I said forget it and dropped 5k for a MAcbook17 and FCP. (I haven't been an apple guy since the 80's). Anyway, the Schmackbook won't open my files either- but I have only begun to fight.

One other "solution" for PC is Avid Liquid. It even flips the image if you're using a 35 adaptor. I found Liquid to be bloated and buggy however. It eventually stopped opening my clips too. I love computers. (Going back to cutting film by hand- yeah right)

Off topic... Aspect HD for PP2, convert mxf to avi or mirror them? Like Raylight for example

There is a thread on the subject here : http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=57522, but I explain a little here. Aspect HD will convert the HVX MXF files into AVIs, just as it does with HDV media, into a Wavelet format for post production. After the conversion the MXF data is nolonger needed (unlike RayLight.) All the characteristics of the original MXF are preserved (including the timecode) as an AVI, ready for accelerated Premiere Pro editing.

Hmmm, I use Liquid and it is extremely stable and featurefull....especially the mediamanagement is awesome (which you need with P2 anyway). But it doesn´t support DVCProHD yet. So how did you use it? on DV50 material? Or does Cineform work with Liquid???

Liquid 6.1 here; well there is 7.1 out now which should be better than the indeed buggy 7.0. I still wonder if Cineform will work with Liquid. Any ideas? I didn´t find that info anywhere, so it probably doesn´t anyway.

I haven't used Liquid with CineForm before, but if Liquid supports standard VideoforWindows or DirectShow based codecs it should work. Please give it a try using CineForm Connect HD 3.0.

That's interesting, I'm using Liquid 7.1 right now and was wondering if I was going to head to Edius or jump ship and start drinking the Apple Kool-Aid. You're saying that with CineForm Connect HD 3.0 I might be able to edit DVCPROHD on my Liquid system??

That might tide me over for the next 8-12 months while some things settle down. (Apples transition, other NLE's rolling out support for the HVX, multiple cores etc)

*edit* ...next version of FCP that doesn't require MXF re-wrap!!

David,

I downloaded Connect HD and installed on my Windows machine. I've been able to convert DVCproHD files to .avi's that I can play in Windows Media, but when I import them into Liquid the clips are one solid color. Any advice?

Matt
