1080/24pa vs 720pn reuslts from a DP's tests

Interesting but like you said, not surprising. Don't you lose the VFR as well as over double the capacity, in 1080?

Did anyone really think 720 would be better than 1080? Who are these guys?
And thanks for the post Pappas. Those charts are terrific.

Much appreciated. There differences are apparent but, at the end of the day, not enough to justify taking 2.5 times as much memory card space and a loss of variable frame rates. Perhaps when bigger cards are out and if Panasonic can somehow release some sort of firmware upgrade to give 1080i variable frame rates, it may be worth it for me.

Actually 720p is better than 1080p for fast action cinematography because 720p offers much greater temporal resolution because you can shoot the full 60 frames per second rather than be limited to 24 frames per second. 60 frames per second is impractical for the distribution of 35mm film because it more than doubles the film distribution costs which runs into tens of millions of dollars. But with the advent of digital cinematography film distribution costs will become a moot issue and there will be nothing holding back 60p except for artistic reasons.
