still unable to connect my HVX....called panasonic and they said I need to have the Microsoft 1394 drivers installed....now I have the TI 1394 drivers. But I cannot find them anywhere to install.....and when I unistall the TI, and connect the HVX, it reinstalls the TI drivers......what in tarnation is going on>?????

I am 99percent sure that barry mentioned once that for pc USB is the only "official" way that works perfectly.
So if you dont wanna run into trouble, use a usb connection to your pc, this will work perfectly!

You cannot use usb to control the camera from an NLE....Firewire must be used. A Panasonic Supoort guy thinks my 1394 port may be bad.....he says it happens...static shock or pluggin/unplugging when the camera is on.......

I am hopefully getting a replacement from my dealer

usb will interface the camera and the computer; that should be the end of your travails here. you are in for a world of frustration if you continue to try this firewire connectivity with the PC based platform. They aren't friendly and this has been confirmed and validated authoritatively...

secondly, if you have a PCMCIA slot on your PC, go get one (i.e., expansion card, or whatever). after all, why "control the camera" through the PC? Just offload to the computer and edit in your NLE...

The HVX 200 connect to PC in Firewire will only work in transfer from footage shot on the DV tape .
USB for P2

My HVX had a dead 1394 port on arrival. Took me weeks to figure that out.... after calls to Panasonic and the dealer.

The dealer didn't want to give me a replacement though.... insisted I send the unit in for repairs.

Repairs took a month.

I wasn't too happy with my dealer.... gave me a song and dance about the thing. Which is understandable... he'd rather sell the HVX he has than replace mine.

It turned out that the fuse on the firewire port was a goner.

Other notes:

I've been trying to figure out whether Panasonic shipped a dead unit, or whether it was something I did. At the time I was testing the Panasonic, I had just finished building my new computer for HD video editing.

My suspicion is that perhaps the USB port on the front of the computer may not have been wired properly (by me). One of the pins on the USB cable is power... (Danger, Will Robinson...) so please do check to make sure the port is OK by plugging in a mouse or cheap usb device. I have since rewired the computer when I put it into a case, so I don't know for sure if that's the cause.

The PC will recognize the footage if you have the appropriate capture software loaded. I use AVID express pro HD. You can convert and export to any file type within AVID.

We have used Fire Wire to transfer MXF back to th HVX, via Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.2.4... no problem

:)

Thanks Stabwound.....I have sent mine in.....fortunately, my dealer sent me a loaner HVX until mine comes back from Jersy repair center......

To all you folks out there who wasnt reading the details of my thread....I was trying to connect the 1394 to capture a dv tape.........I realize usb is for p2......and I appreciate your help.....

Should we connect the FW cable to the laptop/tower with camera off. Then turn on camera after the cable is plugged in to the computer?

Always, especially if using a Mac. There are reports of Z1s, FX1s, DVXs, HD100s, and other cameras with blown firewire ports from plugging in while the power is turned on.

I know firewire is designed to be hot-pluggable, but frankly it isn't working. People are blowing up their firewire ports, and it seems to happen more frequently on Macs. So the manufacturers are now recommending that both units be powered off before plugging/unplugging.
