Wishlist for firmware update for HVX

Of course we all love the HVX200. But getting it to market quickly seems to have left a few options on the editing room floor. I would love to see:
1. More frame rates. The SD card trick is great but it would be nice to have the cam just do it.
2. 1080pn mode. With frame rates! Just the savings of P2 card space would be great.
3. Streaming to fast firewire drives.
I'm sure you all can add some others. Let the discussion begin!
cheers,
Sam

Sam, 1080pN wouldn't save that much space - you would go from 8 minutes on an 8GB card to 9.6 minutes. Still, better than nothing!

I would like to see a super P2 card that you could open up and put your own flash memory into - maybe make it 2 slots wide and hold 4 compact flash cards.

This is not a firmware upgrade but for the 200A If you could I would get rid of the rec check button next to the zoom control and instead put the focus assist button there.

Orientation of the menu buttons on the top of the camera... Now I'm used to it, but it bugged me big time in the beginning. I would also like to have the option to replace the mini DV comparment and door with a small attractive goldfish bowl... would be great fung shui.

1) LCD and viewfinder flip option for 35mm DOF adaptors
2) focus assist/peaking option for video out to second monitor
3) XLR or even just 1/8" stereo audio input to utilize 3rd and 4th audio channels

I think the goldfish bowl is something that they really need to look into. It shouldn't be that hard.

As for orientation I also have gotten use to it but I think it would be a better spot for it.

I think they should add, of course, the customary higher-resolution LCD and viewfinder displays as they did with each of the DVX-upgrades.

Everything else that has been mentioned would be the only things I'd upgrade, this camera's already 90% Perfection and 10% Innovation so how could you build on top of that?

The biggest improvement would be more customizable controls with manual: knee, slope, gamma, black gamma, saturation and 16-way color matrix. In addition to the current HVX offering of presets for "gamma, knee, and matrix"

From what I'm told Canon has these controls on the XLH1.

It would be great to even just click the current options into a full manual mode with a very wide control range. My hope is that such an upgrade would be just software. But I don't really know, if that's possible.

These tools give shooters more control, and allow producers to spend less time color correcting in post. It also wouldn't cause any threat to Panasonic's other lines of camcorders.

I.

Laughs...Yes a gold fish bowl would be a very fungshuey fashion statement and would make you the envy of other HVX owners, but you may curse your fishies the day a client handed you dv tape in the field and asked you to get footage off it.

I don't think Focus Assist is available in SD. With the LCD being as poor as it is, it would be nice to have FA in both HD and SD.

For the 200a, I feel really strongly that Panasonic needs to look at the Sony Z1U LCD as the benchmark for their 2nd gen camera. I can use the Z1U in bright sunlight almost without a Hoodman. The 200 is almost unviewable even with one. Is there a brightness setting for the LCD that I'm missing?!

The horrid resolution isn't a huge hurdle once you become accustomed to the FA being in your viewfinder, but I cannot believe this is the best Panasonic can do on a $5.3k camera.

The camera acts dead when in condensation mode. There should be a way to use the camera to record to a P2 card even if condensation is detected in the tape transport. Otherwise, it's completely disabled for an hour or so.

I would like to see focus assist above or below the actrual 16x9 frame on the 3x4 monitor. Possible in firmware? I bet...

I would like a video signal through firewire in 24/30n mode. I can't monitor the video real time on my mac in these modes.

While this thread has kind of gone off the topic of FIRMWARE wishlists, I'd like to resurrect it to add my idea.

I think it would be great if Focus Assist automatically engages when the focus is being adjusted, obviously while the camera is in manual focus. I imagine that a firmware update could do this.

Second to that, I'd like to be able to move the focus assist region from dead center to wherever I want, or at least in the upper 3rd of the frame.

Finally, is there any indication that Panasonic is interested in minor fixes via firmware updates? Have they done this with any other cameras? Or do they just wait for the hardware upgrade ('A' model)?

Hi ThePange,
Everything gets firmware updates these days. A corporate policy against in this day and age would be foolish.
We can hope!
Sam
