Offical on Camera Light & Accessories LED /Non-LED

I have been using the vidled for about a month now and I LOVE it. I had a chance to do a side by side comparison with the Lightpanel and it blew it away. not even to mention the video roll i got on a D30 when i tried to dim the Lightpanel (It was Dim at best compared to the VidLED even with the necessary gels) Then I impessed the crew when i snapped it off the Camera and stuck it to the wall to create a perfect mobile fill light. Look ma no wires. The battery goes forever (I have two) and as far as looks - who cares- it works and looks fine. I rigged a nice gel half pipe from top to bottom and you dont even know that the white underneath is reflecting the light on the subject instead of absorbing it (Brilliant) Every SINGLE professional that sees mine is buying one. Today I shot at a news event and that light blew away all the network guys. The company I did the comparison with is buying 2 with multiple batteries for the same price they were going to buy the lightpanel. the lightpanel is great dont get me wrong but for the value dont dismiss the VidLED.

I made gel holders for my vidled using four badge clamps. I got some screws from homedepot and just tightened them on by hand. Work great. I can easily take one off the top if I want to use the smaller battery. I used the larger battery when I was at E3 and mounted it on my shoulder brace. It lasted all day and died during my last hour of shooting, used the smaller one as a backup to finish. Here are some pics of the clamps.

I'm glad to hear you like the vidled compare to the lightpanels. I'm on the fence right now on trying to decide on which way to go in regards to an on camera light. I got to see the pag6 and the lightpanel in person and really want to get some good feed back on comparison between the lightpanel and vidled.

I'm going to be shooting a outdoor wedding soon which of course the reception will go into the night. Which this place doesn't have crap worth of lighting around the area where the guest would be seated and where they would be dancing. So I need some on camera lighting but I worry that led's might not do the trick(not strong enough).

That said, I like the pag6 for the pricing and it puts out some good light but what I don't like about it. It's a hologen bulb on camera light that you can't really use it for anything else but on the camera versus lightpanel, vidleds where you can use it off camera as well for fill or anything else. Another thing ithat I really don't like is that you can't dim it like led's and of course you most likely need to have a diffuser since you get some people that would just get upset with this halogen light in there face. Last is that crappy battery pack that you have to use with there system. So you got to buy into there specific batteries if you want more juice for the unit. One more thing is that the run time sucks compare to leds.

Now for the lightpanel, I got to check out the DV kit flood 5600k version. I love the design of the unit and the way its built. Its a great unit all together but I'm somewhat disappointed with the light output compare to the pag6. I tested both in a dark room and the output seem alot better with the pag6 (20W) compare to the lightpanel I was testing. Granted that both unit run on different K temps but for the most part the pag6 had a stronger beam pattern that hit the wall of the dark room and it was just as wide as the lightpanel flood. Another thing I didn't like was that you need to use 2 DVX battery to power the unit. So just the though of running 2 5400mah with the lightpanel plus dv adapter plate and you got this big monster lightunit on top of your DVX. Its not that big of a deal but I would've like to just use one battery powering the unit instead of two at a time to save space and weight. I do like the fact that the Power adapter plate bolts on to the back of the lightpanel. Last of course is the price, now this hurts the most in regards to all the things about the lightpanel. Its a great unit but now that there are other options out there (ex. vidled) and cheaper. I'm really looking now to see if I do have other options beside what I've seen so far.

SunStream, which lightpanel(flood, spot and ktemp) did you get to compare to the Vidled that you have now. Which specific vidled did you compare it to as well? You say that the vidled blows the lightpanel away but in regards to lightoutput, pattern or what? I'm really interested on hearing more details because I like the lightpanel alot. Its design and versatility but I hate it for its light output and price.

I spoke with Marius 2 weeks ago in regards to the vidled that he sells. I couldn't believe I was on the phone with him for almost 2 hours. Talking about lighting, the vidled product line and ideas in gerneal. It was a great conversation and I really got some good info from him. I tell you, he knows what he's talking (engineering background)about, so its good that there was alot of though into making the vidled system in regards to function. I think alot of people could be turned off from it because of its looks (looks=performance frame of mind) but thats the same about the lightpanel in regards to its price as well.

So I'm really looking to see if there are some people out there that got to see a hands on difference between the litepanel and the vidled. It seem like I'm going to head down the led road instead of a halogen pag6 because of the all the ++ and added usages of a led systems but if anyone else has any other ideas. I'm open to suggestions as well so please do!

Re: The "professional" appearance of the white Vidled...

I did a media event with lots of broadcast monkeys the week before last. Despite having a white casing and a funny looking battery on top, nearly every photographer and engineer asked about it, and they were astounded at the price point.

Oh, and they thought the HVX was cool too.

Seriously:
Thanks for all the cool feedback, y'all!

I do a lot of work with the Sony Z1 (I can't be the only one!), but own a Panasonic DVX100AE. If I were to order both Flashshoe adapters, I would need to contact you rather than order online - is that correct?

Wouldn't it be simpler just to include the Sony Z1 version as another online orderable version with an an "Add to cart" button?

Cheers

Pardon very dumb question here since I have always tended to let others do the lighting but considering a dayLED for outdoor fill and potentially for indoor on-camera interview light. Which color correction gels are proper to correct the dayLED to indoor, and conversely, the warmLED to outdoor? Of course, I would be doing a manual white balance.

OK.. think I answered my own dumb question. Lee has some gel packs that convert 5.6K to 3.2K and vice versa. Duh...

VIDLED,
been following this thread as i am looking for a led panel other than lite panel and would like to order a kit immediately. i have emailed you from your site so when you get time can you please email me so we may discuss a good kit for me. im going to be doing some Steadicam work on a last minute hire and doing a lot of run and gun indoors and out at different times. i have a lite panel but would like to get one of your panels for a spare in case something goes tits up.

thx,
marc abernathy

Yeah, well, the Z1 shoe mount is prooving to be a real PITA! :)
We were thinking of just not offering it at all, as it requires quite a bit of manual work to correct the normal one. No, not hours, but certainly enough to be a real pain.
At the moment we'll do as we have, but I do like your suggestion; so we might do that; BUT, I am thinking there will be kind of a Z1 surcharge (I won't call it penalty here! :)

They were? Why didn't I get any?

It's a new thing. We don't actually mention it online....it's kind of an undocumented bonus right now. If it works out well, we will make it "official".
