Bought used DVX...was this worth the deal?

I just bought an original DVX100 for $1500....with 582 hours on the heads. A lot, huh? The camera is in excellant condition though. And i know the previous owner pretty well, and he took care of the camera.

...but 582 hours.

would ya'll have bought the camera? should i have bought the camera? Everything works great on it...

what do ya'll think about the purchase?

I really don't have an idea if you got a good deal or not. DVXs seem to hold their value and if it was well maintained, it probably has a lot of life left. . If it's a done deal then my suggestion would be not to spend a lot of time second guessing yourself (I know, I do the same thing). Start getting to know your camera (check out Barry's book) and thinking about what you're going to shoot with it. :)

For one thing, the 582 hours are just the amount of time the camera was powered on. The time on the heads could very well be (and probably is) a fraction of that amount. If everything is in good working order you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I'm sure it has ALOT of life left in it.

Thanks guys.

Dustino - you did answer something i was wondering too. I didnt know if 582 was the number of actual hours the heads have recorded and played back something, or like you said, just the amount of time the camera has been powered on. Now i know!

Yeah, just be glad you've got a great camera for less than half what people paid a couple of years ago. I'm sure you're going to love it.

actually it isnt how long the camera has been on, its how long the heads are engaged not necessarily recording/playing but ready to..

Good point - thanks for the clarification. Even so, the actual use time for the heads is likely much, much lower than that figure. I know that's the case with mine.

Also think about it this way for 1500 you got a camera (the best sd 1/3 ccd camera for my money) that you can upgrade to HD with the reel stream jack if you wanted. Sweet deal. I've been thinking of buying a well used DVX in the 1000 range just to have as a studio camera with a reel stream upgrade for green screen.
