83 minute Tapes with the HVX200

Hi all--

I just received my HVX200 a couple of days ago and will be using it from time to time with MiniDV tapes. I purchased a box of the Panasonic 63 minute Master tapes and a box of the Panasonic 83 minute Master tapes.

But I just read in the HVX200 Operating Instructions "Do not use 80-minute miniDv cassette tapes." Why? Will it harm the camera?

I shoot live theater events and sometimes an act runs more than 63 minutes.

Does anyone know why Panasonic doesn't want users to use 83 minute tapes with this camera?

Just my thoughts. But I never use VHS 160's or rarely Beta 90 minute tapes. From what I understand, (and have confirmed) is that the tapes are thinner and more prone to dropouts and tape wrinkles.
That's my guess on the longer DV tapes.
Jan? Barry?

yes the tapes are thining and they have numerous issues with them.. you get about the same reliability with 83 minute tapes as you do by running the camera in LP mode ( faster )

yes the tape speed is slower in long play mode.. dont know what i was thinking when i typed faster, i meant to type Slower.. nice catch Ted.

Thanks for the info. But as far as you know using an 83 minute tape from time to time will not hurt my camera. Right?

No, it shouldnt hurt the heads unless the thinner tape breaks. As thinner tape stretches sometimes the edges can be different thickness then the center and that can wear tracks in your heads.. but thats a very very unlikely event and would need to happen for hours and hours and hours.

Thank you so much. I can sleep now.

You're the best!
