test scene from work in progress road picture

One camera used in this.

The car mount is called "The Gripper" (I believe)...we purchased from filmtools.com. It ranges from $100-200 and is absolutely worth it's weight in gold.

Again, no CC, this is all in-camera. If there is grain in the online image, I would blame it on the compression. The image on the monitor is grain free.

looking VERY nice. Im actualy looking for microphone to get at the moment and the sound was very nice in this scene. What Microphone did you use ? thanks

That is very well acted IMO, the guys in particular... the girl, shes ok. The scenes look great. I thought your cuts are almost spot on. The shutter speed when the car pulls up in the first scene was perfect.

Im worried this may wash out on a larger screen. I did some tests with master ped viewing on my 42 inch plasma and +12 was like soap. I hope it comes up OK.

The story seems interesting, certainly makes me want to see more. Sometimes I felt the dialogue went from great to OK.

Get the sound right and its a WINNER!

Thanks for the note. The look is purposefully washed out, including the blacks.

To be clear I was not making reference of the overexposure (always a nice stylstic approach). I meant the IRE Levels.

I think the talent is pretty good and will only get better through rehearsal and timing. The girl is not that good though. The guys can sell it but she is going to need work I think.

If it is intentional (in using a - 12 Master Pedestal) .................. Why ?

wow looks great! i need to mess with my settings more. Very interesting, master ped at +12.maybe ill mess with that more! well, after I fix my cam :crybaby:

This is a rough cut of pre-production tests ? This isnt even the real production ?

Looks great; wonderful stuff.

Calibrate your monitor. Your blacks should be black as your letterbox bars.

Use bounce on the actors
might be hard to achieve
a) ... homeboy shot with master ped at +12 !!!!!
b) I assume his going for a low contrast washed out look, like everything is sand colored, even the blacks.

As for exposing for the actors ... there was a good tip on here a while back ... get window tint, put it on the OUTSIDE of the car windows, taught with gaff tape - no need to squeegeee. So again, put it on the OUTSIDE of only the wiindows that are in the shot leaving the others uncovered so you get as much light bouncing around inside as possible. You can't tell its there but its basically like putting neutral density filters on the outside of the car allowing you to crank the exposure up for the actos without blowing out the extrior. I know you are going for a very hot desert blown out look and you can still get that ... even more so, because you can crank your exposure up even more so all of the interior is pretty hot.

you can see this technique in my short ODD Squad on my homepage below. Not nearly as polished as your work but the exoposure trick in the car worls pretty well I think.

As for the +12 Master Ped ... I knew it was cranked before I saw your setteings ... Could have used more black IMHO.

Devils Rejects looks great with desaturation, blow out AND blacks that are actually crushed. You'll get an even more filmmic look if you get that master ped down. I've never heard of anyone shooting at +12, maybe -12, but not +12 unless its for a scene that takes place in heaven or something. ... you can get even more of that vintage stock look you are going for with more contrast, even crushing the blacks some.

There's a good visual article on here that shows different master ped and set up settings

Nice good editing and did look very filmmic despite my issues with the contrast which could jut be chalked up to taste I guess :) Congratulations

I understand what you are speaking of. The screen grab you present is also from a highly compressed Quicktime file, which needs to be taken into consideration. As well, and again, this was shot primarily for testing purposes to define a look a for the film, a pursuit which sometimes falls outside of convention.

However, I do appreciate you comments. (Though I respectfully disagree on the performances)

Also, to answer the mic question. We had two sennheiser mics, a lav and a ME66 shotgun placed inside the car.

The IRE levels will not be affected by codecs or compression. You may want to reconsider calibrating your monitor properly and keepig your levels within legal IRE limits.

Anyways; looking forward to the final product.

You said "The Gripper" was used. Did you use any additional straps to hold it down? From the filmtools website that "The Gripper" only has a suction cup. That's a lot of trust.

Yes, we used additional tie down straps. We're not that trusting, though the thing is rated for 70ibs, and is fairly un-moveable once you get it cranked down.

I forgot to say it I really like the scenes. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

One other question... Where was the ME66 placed in the car?

Really great stuff. Very promising. I love the unique look. Even though it is 70's retro it feels fresh and original.

Keep the updates coming.

I agree.

Wtf is up with everyone telling people how their footage SHOULD look?
