My Graduation film: "Flat Rider"

well I could not finish it . I thought it was very Slow paced, and man feature? Lets hope not, but on the other hand it was shot nice and the sound was clear.
keep trying

Chris, My internet is a ***** right now, it's logging of every 2nd minute and it's not able to play your film. But my net provider promised that it would be fixed
by the 18. of may, so I'll watch it as soon my line is fixed.
BTW, I put on my headphones and checked out the sound on my film, ****, you
were right. Extreme glitches and pauses which I didn't hear on my speakers, I'm glad you pointed that out :dankk2:

cheers!

hehe pretty good.

it kept me interested. The colours were really nice, except as some have mentioned, some of the shots are inconsistant in the color aspect.

What did you use for sound?

you had alot of wide shots with crystal clear sound, im curious to know what you did to do this? Wireless?

That was amazing.

Probably the best short film I've seen on here. I liked how you directed it. So clean and efficient. There were no stupid pans or slam focuses or obvious things like that. You just let the camera tell the story in pictures.

The acting was very good, but most importantly, they didn't overact. Your dialouge was spot-on, because you didn't try to tell us everything with the words. You weren't overloading every scene and shot with information. That kept me interested until the end. I'm reading the best book i've ever read on that subject: "On Directing Film" by David Mamet.

To me, who cares if technically there could have been a better light set up on one shot or a different camera angle on another. Your short was creative, original, direct, and kept me going until the last fade out.

Well done.

Thanks sonic. I wanna try different styles, but I felt this story would go best
with simple and quirky. I was lucky to have the actors as fellow students, the guy who plays Basheider is very funny and talented, some of his lines were improvised. That book sounds interesting by the way :)
Papa, my school rented in a couple of wireless radio mic's(same type as in saving private ryan) which we borrowed for the exterior wideshots. I just wish we
could have used them through the whole film, but other students were making films as well :)

I just downloaded this and let me tell you I am impressed! You did a great job! I am not good at nitpicking(sp), all the techincal stuff, but like someone said before, it had me entertained the whole way. I actually maximized it, sat on my bed and watched it. Great job with the humor! All in all, one of the best I have seen, I hope I can make something as good as this soon. Kudos my man!

I realy like the film, the only thing I didn't like was the producing job! That guy realy stinks you can realy feel that. He is probably from Holland or something :) Keep on the good work Anders my friend and talk to you soon!

Niels (from Holland)

I am not a technical type, rather a storyteller, and felt this was a very professional piece. The look was good, sound, colors, acting, composition. The lead actor wraps you around his finger. Some of the stuff was very funny. I did miss an emotional 'hook', drama. The music suggested drama but it wasn't there. A person in a wheelchair does not constitute drama in and of itself (however dramatic it is)- only if you get a relationship with the character do you feel the drama. (Maybe a 'conversation' between the two brothers, wherein the lead actor reveals something of the drama that lies behind them) That's why a few people felt it was dragging in the middle. Why is this story being told, where is it going? Tell the audience the cripple has a dream- you don't even have to say what it is, just feed them little hints. That'll keep 'm hungry for more.

I thought there was a little too much 'funny stuff'. One funny/awkward situation after the other. You could have dosed that better, in my opinion. Sometimes a little too in-my-face: rape, death, jews, blacks, Iranians- do you need all that? (been there, seen it)

And if the girl smells the alcohol, a) she would not drink it (unless she was going to sexually 'help' the cripple, which I then thought. (Freudian?) b) then the "...this is not coke...?" is silly. There were a few more little things like this.

But sense of humor is a matter of taste and comedy the most difficult genre to work in. The most important achievement was that for most of the time it was very convincing in form and content, you created 'goodwill'- I wanted to go along with the story, the imagery, the humor, and the actor should also get a lot of credit for this. Despite some points of criticism, I have respect for what you pulled off and can only hope I can produce something which looks and feels as professional as this.

Definitely keep up this excellent work,

Wolf

I thought this was a wonderful little film. It wasn't without its flaws, for sure, but it seemed to have a sense of identity and heart that most movies I see lack. If I had one critique, it would be of the Linda character, who seemed relatively unbelievable even in the bizarre world that you placed her in.

I'll keep an eye out for your next work.

Thanks for putting so much time into your posts guys. I really do regret not putting more time into evolving the brothers communicaton. Flowolf, You have many, actually my teachers brought up a lot of the same things on my evaluation and I really do regret not putting more time into evolving the two brothers comunication. I'm not quite sure what you mean with the music suggested drama which wasn't there.
And Mr. Producer - Niels, hope your doing good with your new hvx200(you lucky
son of a *****..:)), we'll meet again!
Billybob, I haven't done much, but I have made 3 other pieces together with

Doing good with it, I love it! Still waiting for the p2 card and the macbook pro to edit on, so the real job is still to come. We will meet again, that's for sure!

Smettli, I meant that the drama stays on the surface. The music is very sensitive but the story -despite it's dramatic potential- is not. I feel there is a 'promise' that's not delivered and that promise is an insight into the handicap and/or the relationship between the brothers.
The choice to put him in that absurd wheelchair and subject him to all sorts of abuse/maltreatment/ridicule (however funny at times) also takes away from the drama- it just makes it hilarious/ridiculous. That's why I suggested to cut back on the funny stuff (kill your darlings...) and seek a more balanced mix of humor and drama (sorry to keep repeating this word- can't seem to find a synonym right now...). I thought there was a potential of making the story both dramatic ánd absurdistic. That would have made a more lasting impact.

I thought this was great. An absurdist flick that's idiotic but still captivating enough for adults to watch. (Sorry, but Napoleon Dynamite was so beyond dumb that I couldn't stomach more than 5 minutes.) Contrary to flowolf's comments, I thought there weren't enough stupid, unexpected comments. The "you're black" comment threw me off, but was so unexpected and unfitting that it just left me with an "ooohhh-k" kind of reaction--the kind where you're smiling while saying that though. Like flowolf, I thought it was a bit silly to have her smell the liquor, then taste it anyway as if she couldn't smell what it was. BTW, that girl is quite attractive--in a Jodie Foster sort of way--plain-Jane but cute ... and nice rear view when the handicapped guy ran into her. Sexy accent as well ... hhhmmm. Oh yea, my only question was, and this may have been obvious to you film guys, but when he was holding open the frig and looking for Coke, the items in the frig door seemed to sort of waver or almost-pixelate. I'm not sure how to describe it. What was going on there? This is not a criticism; I'm just guessing your answer to that will help me with future filming. Was it the lighting ... compression issue ... what.

As for lighting issues and all that, like someone else said, the audience doesn't notice such things when watching a "great movie." When the untrained eye is watching a movie, it only notices poor cinematography when the film itself sucks. Let's all keep in mind that any clip posted here is going to be needled over by probing, trained eyes. It reminds me of the behind-the-scenes parts of the Star Wars series DVDs--George Lucas and his peeps looking over footage with no sound yet, and deciding on changes. Anyway, I'm sure you all get my point.

Great short dude. I really would like to see this as a feature. Do it. I'd buy it.
