How Do I mount HVX to Mac Desktop??

How do I get the HVX to mount to my desktop as a drive? I hooked it up via FW and it's not there. I can capture to FCP, however is there a setting I need to do get it to mount..? Also under drive utility, it's not there either! However it does show up as connected under system analysis.

Another question, After I copy the MXF file to a drive for storage. At a later date can I drop that mxf. file intact back on P2 if I wanted to take it over to a facility for direct hookup to a monitor via the HVX or P2 deck?

You need to install the Panasonic drivers. You also need to put it in 1394 Device mode. It will show up as No Name and No Name 1 volumes (if you have two cards). Copy both the .txt and contents folder to an appropriately named folder on your PB hard drive or attached FW drive and you should be go. In FCP>FIle>Import>P2 Import and navigate to that folder when you want to do the Quicktime conversion from MXF file. The .TXT file is critical.

I dont think the .txt file is critical at all. I dont even think FCP uses it.

You have to use the MODE switch on the back and hold it down until the PC/DUB light comes on.

Press the switch briefly and it'll toggle between camera and MCR/VCR mode. But when it's in MCR/VCR mode you hold it down for three seconds and it'll enter PC/DUB mode. Make sure in the menus that you've chosen "1394 Device", and then when you go into PC/DUB mode it'll show up as a drive.

And yes, you can copy the MXF files back to the card. But do it as a whole card -- use the whole contents folder, not just an individual MXF.

Hmmm....when I first got the camera, I tried to import without the .txt file and it wouldn't import. I also remember reading a thread about this subject and people having problems if they didn't have the .txt file. I just tried it though (duplicated a P2 folder...deleted the .txt file and went to P2 Import) and it seemed to work okay without the .Txt file. I must have done something else wrong in the early days. Thanks for the clarification. (Just did a search of the forum and saw it was apparently the "Lastclip.txt" file that is critical...not the .txt file. My bad. :-)

Thanks guys! Just learning the workflow. Wow, it's awesome. It mounted and shooting off to the drives as I type. In the late 90's I started to go from 35mm still to Digital. It has that same feel. Simply awesome! Nice to see tape starting to fade away in my mind....... Reminds me when shutting down the Hal9000 ....

Barry that is great. It means that you can at a later date go to a clients office with some footage in raw MXF that was dumped off a while ago and still display it on an actual monitor via component. Or take that P2 to a deck at a studio for a number other needs. So cool!

Again, thanks everyone...

lol, see I had the opposite...the first time I ever used it I did NOT include the lastclip.txt by accident. I read on here it was critical...I tried to import in to FCP and it did it flawlessly...then I read FCP doesnt even use it. From now I include everything. But those first few card dumps...no issues without the lastclip.

You know what is funny, I did not even install the CD and it attaches fine.. Am I missing something if I dont? Workes fine imorting to FCP and files are perfect after FCP converts them to MOV files.

Also what is and sorry for asking, but what is +3ped +3sat? How do I set it up in the HVX. Major newb :)

Hi Barry... When I try this, I get a message that says that the card can not be modified. I noitice the P2 card is set for read only on my mac. What is it that I'm doing wrong?

Hmmm...maybe the drivers are only needed for mounting P2 cards directly on a PB in the card slot and not through a firewire device? Actually makes sense in a way since I can download P2 cards to my firewire drive through 1394 Host mode and of course I didn't install the driver to the harddrive.

I never installed anything either on my MacBook. I just plugged it in via FireWire (with the camera in PC mode) and that was that.

But I do have the problem where it frequently doesn't connect, and the only solution is to reboot (which is not a solution at all).

Anyone know how to get the MXF content back to the P2 card on the MAC.. I still get a message that says that the card can not be modified when trying to drop the contents folder on the P2 card titled " no name " . I noitice the P2 card is set for read only on my mac and won't let me mod my permisions. What is it that I'm doing wrong? Also when I stick the P2 card in the PCMCIA slot it won't mount to the desktop, however it does via FW. Maybe that is normal though....

I can copy files onto a P2 card from my PB when it's mounted through the PCMIA slot, but have the same problem as you do when mounted through 1394 Device mode on my G5 through firewire.

I formated the P2 card in the HVX also, and experience the same issue in 1394 Device mode. I went into disk utilities and looked at the info for each "disk"... one under the Firewire connection and one under the PC Card connection.

The only difference I saw, other than connection type, was under the "Writeable": area...PC Mode says "yes"...Firewire mode says "no".

Why...don't know.

Hi Bob! Thanks for helping! Duhhh! Found the Mac P2 drivers. P2 mounted....
