Thanks!

RED#111! Were you at the show?

I would've done the presentation in French. ;)

Unfortunately, I wasn't (I had business here in Europe) but I appreciate the francophone (latin one) concern... Maybe next year... :) In fact, my contact with RED it was by phone from Europe (despite my US adress as well).

EDIT -- Do you know if there is any other european purchases by now?

Fred,

Did you encounter any DROP OUT problems during shooting? Did you use any hard disk recorder?

Did you notice any drop in resolution in your moving camera shots?

I have put forward these questions here (not in my email to you) so that many will be benefited by your experience.

Looking forward to receive your sample footage.

Actually Maheel, much to my surprise we didn't experience any drop outs. We used the recommended HDV master tapes from Sony.

Conditions were pretty harsh at times. The only time we had to shut down was when a sudden wave of hot humid air generated condensation in the camera. It was a 2:00 AM and without warning, the temparature rised 10 degrees. Very strange phenomenom. But on the beach, weather changes fast.

My main concern with the format is in post. It's a bit like crumble cake. Looks great as long as you don't mess with it too much. As soon as you start doing heavy duty color correction you discover the limitations of a long GOP codec. When you try to serve it it breaks down through your fingers. ;)

Fred,

I was away for the past few days. Hence is the delay in response.

I am going to use AVID Xpress Pro to edit. I intend to mixdown the fotage to Avid DNX HD codec. Hope it will solve the limitation of the long GOP.

During the day time it is almost difficult to shoot without the ND. Did you use the inbuilt ND filters.

Thanks.

We used it sometime. Most of the time we used lense filters.

The DVDs are in the mail...

I really loved the footage, and I have looked at the workflow chart, but I am not clear how the work went from 50i to 25p, was it de-interlaced in FCP?

We deinterlaced in FCP using the Nattress plugins after converting the clips to DVCPRO HD50i.

I am not an expert or even a professional, so do not be too hard on me DVXers, but I have to ask ... Why is 24p capture so vital to everyone when you can get such good results by de-interlacing ?

It's actually a good question.

Shooting in 24p native sure makes things easier. The process to go from 50i to 24p is a bit painful and can be problematic at times especially with fast lateral action.

We were going to shoot this film with the HD100 in 24p but the camera wasn't ready yet. We decided to go with the Sony Z1U 24 HR before principal photography.

yes.. before the good old DVX came along people had to use software or hardware to convert to 24p... it wasnt fun. It could be done, and never did it look 100% as good as real 24p, but it did a pretty good job.

Of course, this is if we are trying to simulate 24p as in terms of how film looks, if you want a video look, 24p isnt going to do anything for you.

Why is the conversion to 24p from 60/50i with HDV footage so much better looking than it did back when everyone was using SD cameras? Because of the resolution?

yes.. because when you go from a HD source to a DV 24p output you dont loose sharpness with the blending.
