cowboys and hardcore

So if I understand this correctly, you had a mini-35 an HVX and an XL2 on this shoot and you opted to shoot the majority with the XL2 as your main camera? Things that make you go HMMMM.... (...leg... being.... pulled...!)

Don't get me wrong, it was nicely done. Good lighting, well directed, etc. But I have a hard time believing there was HVX in this at all. All I saw was XL2 gamma with 4:1.1 color.

EDIT: went back to watch a second time, and if there's any HVX in here, it's in a 1.5 second shot of an old man angrily raising his arm at the band. If that's the shot, you mixed it in really well. But why bother with the HVX at all for such a minor shot? Do you own both cameras?

answers: not interested in resolution over lens selection atm esp since music videos are broadcast in standard deff and without a 35mm mount for the hvx there is no comparison : i deff didnt feel compelled to shoot on straight hvx200 and get the hd video look - the next project however will be different as we have a ps technik mount for the hvx. And as far as you being able to see 4:1:1 color spacing on a highly compressed .mov file that is laughable and impossible... thanks for compliments in regards to the **** that actually matters, lighting, directing etc though. good eye on the old guy shot aswell - there are more but this was the day after getting the hvx200 and we didnt have a laptop for on set capture yet so p2 space was scarse and it could only be used very briefly - to basically get the feel of it before using it entirely on the next project.

Very nice indeed. All the important elements are covered well.. and always nice to see an homage to the Blues Brothers.... I was just waiting for a rendition of Rawhide...

Looks ready for the telly. Got plans for this beauty?

Well, no it's not laughable or impossible at all. I'm an artist by profession so my eye sees things the average person misses. I've seen so much DVX and XL2 footage in the last couple of years (on .mov files) that I've grown used to it and I can pick it out a mile away. I can see the limitations of 4:1:1 when color correction is applied as compared to doing a similar approach on 4:2:2 (highly compressed or not). The end result is different, usually resulting in a less sophisticated color palet. Skin tones react differently and XL2 source gamma really stands out to my eye. (although as I said, you mixed the footage in really well). Magic Bullet, yes? That stuff's like ketchup. Throw enough of it around and the average person won't know the difference between hamburger and steak.

Don't take my comments the wrong way though. I honestly thought you were an XL2 user trying to get us to slobber over your footage and then come back and tell us there was no HVX in there. Glad to hear I was wrong. And like I said, the video was well done. :love4:

good vid, nice lighting, good work

my only complaint/crit...

when you "over use" an effect it get gimmicky... all the selective focus in the intro sequence (before they start thrashin and trashin) was a bit gimmicky.... its like you're saying, "oh by the way... I have this gnarly lens and can do all this cool focusing!! check it"

I'm being humorous cuz I dont wanna sound condescending.... good work though

Should this be in the HVX200 forum?

It's primarily XL2. -- Either way, that's one kick ass video. Looks, feels, sounds great!

I didn't know XL2 looked that good with 35mm adapter. w0wsa.
