Using the FS-100 above the arctic circle

The FS-100 has so far performed better in most respects than i thought it might given the harsh environment of Pt. Hope Alaska. I have kept it inside my jacket to keep it warm and used the belt clip to give the fan a little breathing room. The battery has lasted as long as they said it would - about 90 minutes. The interface and offloading of clips is ok.

The big Killer is the dropouts. I put some sticky velcro tape in two spots on the camera, one just above the battery in the back, below the Audio level controls; and the second - straight up from the 4 pin 1394 jack. I used two rip-ties attached to the 1394 cable to keep a snug connection to the camera and still - drop out that is bad enough that I have stopped using the unit. The unti was not subjected to shock of any kind during recording. The 6 pin 1394 connect on the FS-100 seems very secure and so i have not modified it in any way. Anyone else having any luck with the FS-100?:crybaby:

You mean, you cannot walk during recording? What about the 10 second shock buffer? Shouldn't the price of include goog protection?

Hi,

If you could post a frame grab of the drop out, that would be very helpful in helping to analyze what your problem is. Are you missing frames, or actually taking a hit on a frame? It has been so long since I have seen a dropout in DVCPRO HD, it is hard to imagine.

I need to check into the buffer. right now it is set to whatever the default is. I'll report back on that. However, i wasn't wanlking or moving at all. The camera was on a tripod and the unit was inside my outer jacket in an inner pocket.

It drops out when the firewire gets bumped it is a loss of signal. sorry man that sucks. I would just use p2

I'd love to but:
A they are expensive to buy or rent.
B We are shooting a doc and sometimes we need to let shots roll for a long time to get the energy going in a scene. Also, the naming structure on P2s baffles me. The FS-100 is far superior. At least the default naming structure is sequential. Is there a way to set up your own names on p2's?

I will. Hopefully later today, shooting schedule permitting.

my guess is this is the fs-100 and not the the HVX
i've heard many stories about the previous firestores having drop-outs

Even with the dropouts it looks like a sweet shot! :-) I'd call FS, complain, tell them what your doing and see what they say.. There must be a tech support number..???

Yep.I agree. I'll try that when I am back in Anchorage on Fri. I'll post the results.

Drop-out Issues with FS-100

Drop-out Issues with FS-100

I had the exact same problem with an interview shoot I was doing. The camera was mounted to a tripod and the fs-100 was mounted to the camera via zacuto double mount on zacuto's lws rails via a noga arm so there is no way that the firewire cable was moved during the shoot. Check out the pic I posted on another thread. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=56648

Looks like errors on the hard drive. I have had the same thing on TiVo units when the hard drives got errors. The only other thing I could think that might cause that would be overheating but I don't think that is really possible in northern Alaska this time of year. ;)
