That's awesome. I hope mine get's here today or tomorrow so I can build it this week-end.

Chris

p.s. Isn't it awesome when packages are coming in the mail. I love the anticipation. It feels like Christmas.

Excellent! I can't wait. I got the platform ready to go, I copied the design i saw earlier in this thread, looks nice, Though I wish I hadn't of tried to do a logo with spray paint, that was a hassle, would have been easier with paint and a fine brush I think.

CMessineo : It's definitely awesome getting stuff in the mail, new toys rock! I can finally put some use to this indifocus i got too.

...and spray paint logos are definitely difficult, unless you have a nice cutout to spray through. definitely easier to go with a screen printing on the material.. but costs alot more.

I've gone to Home Depot and they don't have any boards an inch thick. Is this a common problem? Do I need to order this wood special?

Chris

i could only get 3/4 inch myself, as i noticed a couple others on here did, but i also put carpet on it, which as was said earlier, might help the thickness a bit for attaching the rails. Unless you're one big heavy mofo, i doubt 3/4 is gonna cause you too many troubles :)

the 1" ply isnt really neccessary. the 3/4" is fine but will of course not hold as much weight. although ive stuck a heck of alot of weight on an old version 24 wheel kit using 3/4 inch ply just fine. the 3/4" also allows you room for surface laminates or carpeting as mentioned. We of course suggest the stronger 1" material for really heavy loads though. either way itll ride great for you. id estimate that about 75-80% of all the Cine Dollies out there are using 3/4" becuase the 1" is generally a special order item at alot of stores. lumber yards generally have it on hand though. We do have plans to start shipping FULLY CONSTRUCTED dollies soon though ( very nicely custom manufactured platforms ), and that should save some hassle for peeps.

Just Ordered!

Just Ordered!

Neil,

Was wondering if you knew how long the turn around is if I just ordered this week? Sorry to bother ya, just cant wait for a nice dolly shot!!

Brian

Neil,

Thanks for the dolly. It is a great product!

Two followup questions:

1. Where is the best place to put the quick clip hangars?
2. How should I store the dolly? Standing up, on it's side, etc.

I'll post pictures this week.

Well first.. thank you for the compliment, and thanks for the purchase!

As far as the quick clip hangars go, I personally think that right down the centerline of the underside is a great place for them. one spaced just above the hinge mount at the bottom of the handle, and one just below the shaft grip. Now for storage, I would store it either on its side or on front or back with the trucks and wheels facing away from the wall. for those sometimes long winter type storage needs id cover it just to keep any dust ff the bearings. Not really a big concern of course, but i tend to baby all my equipment a little. :)

DEHON,

I sent you a private message with your package tracking info. since you are not in the U.S. it does not arrive in 2-3 business days like the U.S. packages do.

Hi again!
Today´ve arrived!
Rock solid construction Neil! Today I go for the plattform... ups...

For spanish people: ¡El kit es increiblemente robusto y SILENCIOSO!, merece la pena, de verdad.

Best regards!

I think thats our first compliment in spanish. Happy shooting DEHON! I guess you wont need that tracking info then :). Glad you like the kit, and I hope your platform shopping goes well.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Got my kit today, Im off to home depot for the platform. I love it, the only problem is that I have to re-draw my story boards for my shoot this weekend to include dolly shots. Thanks so much for your speedy service, I just ordered it a few days ago!!!You rock!

A few pointers on putting together your dolly:

- Keep in mind it can get a little expensive depending on how much you add to the platform. I made one and painted it, attached carpet to the top (a must for making it look professional), added side rails, and if you don't have certain tools or if you can't borrow them, you will have to buy them (especially the drill bit).

- Home Depot generally does not carry 1" plywood. You can go to a lumber store or Ace for 1", but it will cost like $60 just for the cut piece you need. I unfortunately did it this way. My suggestion is to do what Jarred did and take two 1/2" ply pieces and glue them together using wood glue.

- Before you paint or put on carpeting, drill your holes. When you put on paint or carpet, it will mess up the dimensions a little and be harder to make your marks on the wood. Having the holes pre-drilled makes putting everything in line much easier.

- Make sure to measure from the factory cut edge when measuring out your lines!

- Do not use a 1/4" drill bit rather than the 5/16" bit and just twirl it around a little more to make the hole bigger. This will mess up your line (trust me- I know since I did it).

- Test all of your equipment 3 times before going into your shoot. Getting used to shooting with the dolly takes experience for the camera person and the dolly puller assistant. You also want to make sure everything is built right.

- Chop your PVC into 5' pieces- transporting the 10' pieces is a pain in the ass. Create a system to link these pieces together seemlessly. There are many posts on this in the forums.

Hopefully, someone here can learn from these pointers before going into building their deck and going into a shoot. It will save you a lot of headache on your big day of shooting.
