I'm new so try not to make fun =)

So I finally got my DVX100 from a freelance I know up in New York. Yes it's the first generation dvx100 (not the A or B). Got an awesome deal on the camera, which happens to have been taken care of over the years. It was used a lot on Entertainment Tonight and shows like that.

Anyways, any opinions on the original DVX100? Should I have spilled over the extra cash to buy the newer 100A, or perhaps even the latest 100B? I am not in any way a professional. I'm a student at Texas Tech University studying broadcast....and film/videos right now is just kind of a hobby for me. I've gotten fed up with the consumer camcorder's imaging, so i decided to go ahead and invest in the prosumer department.

so is the "old" DVX100 still a good investment???

Any working DVX is a good investment. If you're just a hobbyist, then there's no need to fork out the extra cash. Good luck

good to know. I know my hobby will eventually turn into more of a "requirement". My major is Electronic Media and Communications.....which involves television production and such.

As I've heard, the DVX is the best among all the competition, and now i strongly agree. The deal I got on the camera, was way too good to pass up, given I'm on a tight budget and there's no way I could afford a brand new one right now.

I plan on making a lot of drag racing and car videos, along with other random crap until I need to start making short film projects for school

i agree any dvx is a good investment, u are already alot of steps ahead of other struggling film makers(i used a handycam for years until i got my dvx)

The original DVX is what started it all. You couldnt buy a better camera for the money being on a tight budget as you say.

The menu display said it had 582 hours on it.
I paid $1500 for the camera, two standard batteries, the charger, remote, and two panasonic "professional" tapes.
Given that a new 100B's MSRP is around $4000, I feel that I got a pretty good deal. I know the camera was well taken care of, as far as regular maintenance, etc... (I know the original owner, and i've seen how nicely he treats equipment, even if its not even his)

Is $1500 too much to pay for a camera that has 582 hours on it? That sounds like a lot of hours to me, but i'm just a newb, so what do i know. I still see the original dvx100's going for over $2000 on eBay all the time.

I hear ya. I know the DVX may be more camera than i need right now....but the 1 CCD consumer camcorders just weren't doing it for me anymore. After using a JVC, then a Sony Handycam, the results were dissapointing more times than i liked. It seems like I do alot of filming in low-light situations, and so far the DVX has been pretty good at keeping a clear image at the lowest levels.

i think the deal is ok.
in my opinion the most valuable difference with the 'A' version is the focus assist/enhancer in cine mode.
but if you have some extra bucks in your budget, investing on a external mic would be a good decision. you can get something more than decent for less than 200$
