Is it possible to change HVX PAL to HVX NTSC by changing firmware

Maeby my question is stupid but, I've been waiting month now, that when will apple support PAL 720P/PN, seems nothing happends. So would like still do some job, even Job's don't mind us – europeans. So does anyone know is it possible do that, by changing firmware or are there some physical differenses between those cameras, what makes it impossible?

This is very frustrating. When I was talking to :kali: Pana's dealer, he did not mention, that FCP is not full supported. So I have HVX, but no able to use it like I want.

Want to be a Mac user:badputer: , but I think I'm a Mac luser :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Firmware is for minor software updates.

To change from NTSC to PAL would require a new clock crystal at least. So no, it's not something that could happen via firmware.

Send your requests to Apple; only Apple can update FCP to work with the HVX 720/25P mode.

Hey Barry,
Do you know if the PAL HVX is able to do the variable frame rate hack, there for being able to shoot in PAL 720/24P? Can anyone confirm this???
Thanks mate.

The variable frame rate scene file adjustment does work, yes. But I would sincerely doubt that it would support 24p, and even if it does, I would doubly doubt that it runs at 23.976 fps. None of the additional frame rates run at their same nominal frame rate (for example, in the US camera, 12 fps isn't 12.000, and it isn't 11.988 either, it's actually 12.26). So even if the PAL camera supports a 24fps option, there's almost no chance that it would be a US-compatible 23.976. The crystal that governs the PAL 25.000fps rate wouldn't provide for 23.976.

Wow, your DVX/HVX knowledge constantly amazes me Bazza!

Well if that is the case and the PAL HVX can in fact do 24fps (24.000) would that be exactly the same frame rate as film? And would it be PERFECT for a Film out Transfer in America? as film is actually 24fps, not 23.976.

Cheers

The difference between 24 and 23.976 is so infitesimally small as to be basically irrelevant. For TV work, 23.976 is the right frame rate. 23.976 works perfectly fine for film transfers, you just have to stretch your audio 0.1% to fit.

If the PAL unit could do either 24.000 or 23.976, they'd both be close enough that a simple US conversion could be easily accomplished.

Thanks Barry :)
So thats means that PAL at 24.000 would be perfect for a film out??

Is the PAL model better than the NTSC model like the DVX was in terms of picture quality or the way it handles?

Can anyone out there in PAL land verify that this works? If anyone could post their findings with the variable fame rate hack it would be greatly appreciated!

If it does 24.000 then it would be 0.1% more appropriate than the NTSC version would be for film out. But the only thing that's "perfect" for a filmout is film.

As for HD, the NTSC and PAL units are going to be almost indistinguishable, they use the same color space and the same color sampling and the same overall resolution. There's no difference in recorded resolution in the 720p mode between the two.
