HVX Subway Commercial online

Gotta love those white studios, makes everything stand out so beautifully. Very clean and professional!

thanks Jarred... the commercial looks so clean it pops... see what good lighting can do with this camera!

If I only carried my HVX to get coffee . . .

I was walking into Starbucks early one morning about a week ago, and there were two geese trying to eat the bread off a poster in the window of Subway. I could be rich!! Rich, I tell you.

Funny as could be though.

Damn... you'd have gotten paid for that shot... I know there will be a time when we'll be getting HVX quality out of our phones... and then we'll never miss a shot like that. I wish I had footage of my self the last time I went golfing.. and I shanked a ball to the right about 50 yards.. It hit a tree, bounced all the way back to me and without moving an inch I cought it on my hand.. Called Mulligan and then spanked it down the fairway...
Everything was dialed in and the BS started flowing about me trying to do that crap...

Maybe a time for an HD bloopers and Practicle jokes show?

dude if someone filmed that you woulda won 10k on americans funniest videos.. thats a few nice p2 cards.

peter is a member here ( the DP ) so if you got any questions about the commercial you can ask him.

am i missing something here ?...all i get on the link is a tiny flash player window showing the ad in a tiny box.? is there a HQ large size version i cannot see?

if thats not the case... although i am not knocking the footage, how can u judge the quality based on that?

at that size box , my canon ixus's still camera's video would look great...

giving credit , from what i see the ad looks totally pro.

harsh.

you can tell a lot from a small video. great composition, great lighting, overall a very pro piece. if you saw that and were never told it was an HVX, you probably would have never guessed.

androow, that comment just doesn't make any sense to me. do you base a camera's capabilities just off pixel resolution? the whole point with buying one of these cameras is to be able to film movies, commercials, etc. that look pro and don't make anyone think they are digital "prosumer" cameras. This commercial showcases that very well.

thanks for the link, Jared.

Unfortunately, you're most likely not going to see full resolution stuff posted on the internet. The files are just too big. Plus, even if someone did post the file, the quality that everyone sees would be limited by the monitor they watch the footage on. It all becomes subjective no matter how large the files are.

We got to see a longer version of this commercial at Bootcamp projected from Evin's 2K projector. It was pristine. Everyone who saw it would vouch for that, I think.

While I agree it looks like a great commercial, it does nothing to show off the HVX itself that I can tell. At that resolution it really could have been shot with any decent 24P camera. It really is all about the lighting and the cinematrography. No doubt. I suppose an HD version would really shine. But as far as I can tell my buddy and I could have shot that with our old DVX cameras in one of the local studios. Not saying the HVX is bad...just saying in a studio with good lighting the HVX is that good.

Of course if it going to air in HD then the HVX would get the nod.

Thanks Jarred for sharing this...Actually, this doesn't really do the camera justice. It looks NOTHING like it did in the studio on a 42" Plasma Screen when I was shooting.
The editor in NY was unready for P2, something we'll have to deal with for awhile, he's all set up on an Avid, and had a tight deadline. Unwilling to try this on FCP in that situation he asked for dailies on Digibeta which (Evin Grant) made for me on the set and that's the source material which went into the cutting of this spot. SO, it's never been mastered in HD, hence the diminished quality. Since shooting that spot with a rented HVX200, I went out and bought one of my own. For what it's worth, the agency for whom I shot that spot just hired me to shoot something else for them and specifically asked for the HVX...

Peter.. That's great news. I think that this is the most client friendly camera I've ever seen.. and that is really where a lot of us get caught up and forget that our work is intended for someone else.. and that we are often hired to facilitate their ideas and objectives. I just know that the director on this last shoot was completely in love with the playback capabilities, color reproduction.. and variable frame rates. We shot side by side with the JVC and that was so ghastly retro that it really did make me cringe the entire time....

Thanks for sharing and what would you say are the strenghts/weaknesses and areas of concern/expectation that needs to be monitored? Do you also plan on getting any cinema style accessories?

I too saw segments of this shoot at bootcamp in full 720P glory. My jaw hit the floor and I was suddenly confronted with the fact that my camera was WAY more capable than I am. But I'm workin' on it!!! Nice job Peter, it really would be nice to have some of the full blown HD shots on line.

Go to Boot camp and see the raw footage on a 720p projector and you will really understand how good it is:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Justyn, The obvious weakness is the noise in the red channel... and general need for decent amounts of light, both aspects that literally need to be "monitored" in production. I'm getting an LCD with built-in waveform monitor.
I have a Arri 4x5 Mattbox and Croisel Follow focus set up on mine. Waiting for the right moment to spring for a 35mm lens adapter.
