Original version of Star Wars Trilogy to be released on DVD

This is silly. Every one is playing into the bastards hands. No one wins with Lucas except Lucas. He's a greedy snake who knows what buttons to push. Of course he is going to release this box set and that box set and these toys and this crazy straw, but at the end of the day he is screwing the people he should be giving back to.

I've read some stuff on line and some of his responces to his fans. My favorite was on the secret shadow (or whatever) website. A fan had written to Lucas and expressed his excitement for the latest film. The fan had seen the film four times while it was in the theatres. Lucas replied "you only saw it 4 times, that's why we didn't break 400 milllion in the states." Tell me, who talks to their devoted fans like that?

I understand wanting the whole shooting match if you are into Star Wars but this isn't like waiting for season 2 of Twin Peaks, where the legal problems drive the car, this is just another way to screw the obsessive. Ask your self, while you lay your head on your "Official Jar-Jar Binks Collectors pillow, "how many more ways can Lucas get into your wallet."

They are just movies! Only 2 of them are worth a damn and they were made over 20 years ago!

I know I'm often the voice of negativity, but damn it.

lol - I don't really disagree with anything you've said, but with regard to the truly "hardcore" Star Wars fans, they're buying into more than just movies...it's the universe that Lucas and his employees created.

For some people, the movies are one element of the fantasy, and maybe not even the most compelling element (there are books, games, animation, toys, conventions, etc. to keep 'em busy).

This is the genius of Lucas, and it's much more about marketing than filmmaking. He didn't just create some movies, he created a comprehensive fantasy world to exploit in every conceivable fashion.

Well put. I can't disagree with you either. It is kind of the model for the world. The problem there is the world model is fundamentally evil and doesn't work. It's a shame that some one as successful as Lucas is blinded to that fact after making a series of 6 films that speak about the opposite. He's created a world for himself, but doesn't run it like a Jedi. Hey, George, you look good in black.

Exploitation is exploitation. I don't care if it is given with a free T-shirt.

Many of my students are really into Star Wars and we have heated debates all of the time. My heart goes out to many of them. I wonder if they will ever, and I do mean ever, get a girl. You know, one that can compete with the new box set.

I am NOT paying for this. I have always been against piracy as I see it hypocritical for someone pursuing a filmmaking career to steal dvds. It just doesn't make sense. However, when you've bought the same movie 4 times, I think that's the ONE time where piracy becomes okay.

Why not just sell the copies you currently have? At 4 copies of each movie that's 12 copies, so you'd only have to unload them at $3 - $4 each.

I for one can proudly/sheepishly say that I have never (ever) seen Star Wars. Any of them. Ever.

I just never had an interest in them or sci-fi in general.

Although I guess I could go down in history as the first person to see the entire series in chronological order???

Sorry Kai, I did that.

Up untill last summer I hadn't seen the originals. Then I did a marathon of them in eposidoc order on alternating nights for 2 weeks: Epp1, skip a day, Epp2, etc.. ...and finished it off with Space Balls (of course) which is by far the best of the lot :)

Just keep holding out -- maybe you can be the LAST person on earth to see them!

Did Lucas really write that to a fan? lol

I dont mind buying the star wars dvds because I dont care about bluray-or anything to update it--just want an update from my vhs copies.

Star Wars (or rather the first two) were fun but dumb serial adventures. Lucas completely destroyed his own universe(although to be fair--he didnt create it himself--he had lots of help) with the prequels. Plus digital effects robbed movies of the novelty you had for a couple of decades where so much work went into showing you something new, that you didnt get that many big blockbuster type fx movies. Nowadays--its hard to come up with something to impress--and the writing has regressed to a level that you dont even find in an AIP B movie from the 60s so the basic storytelling is lacking(IMO).
I didnt even bother to see Revenge of the Sith and I am in no hurry to.

all the movies suck in my opinion good when a child, dump when im older. the only one i concider to watch would be empire ever thing else is garbage.

I know I am about to get some heat here, but I do have to say that it is pretty darn easy to jump on the "I hate Lucas" bandwagon. To start, Lucas wanted to make "Star Wars". He made the first movie, the audience went nuts, so he went nuts and made "Empire" and "Return of the Jedi". People went nuts over "Empire", most went nuts over "Return".

And then nothing for a very long time.

Fans everywhere wanted something more. Lucas makes the special editions. Some go nuts, others feel the opposite.

Fans want more, Lucas makes "Phantom Menace". Everybody hates Jar-Jar.

Fans want more, Lucas makes "Attack of the Clones". Though some see this as an improvement, I thought it was the worst one. By this time, fans are "jumping on the bandwagon" to hate Lucas.

Yet...fans still want more. Lucas makes "Revenge of the Sith". I loved this one, btw. Fans are left with that awkward silence at the end, wondering "Did I like what I just saw?"

Fans say, "Hey the new movies suck, we want the originals on DVD!" So Lucas delivers. "What? You gave us the Special edition, and you added Hayden??? AHHHH!!!!!"

Fans then say, "Please, please PLEASE just give us the originals on DVD! You can take what you want, just give us the originals!"

And now he is. And now we are all bitching yet again.

Don't get me wrong, the relationship between the fans and Lucas has been a long, troubling road, but then again, we asked for it.

George Lucas, one of the MOST SUCESSFUL INDEPENDENT FILMAKERS OF ALL TIME, is just doing what the fans have asked him to do. To be honest, no matter what Lucas does, it will NEVER be the same as watching the old trilogy for the first time when you were eight. Will Lucas make 7-9? Probably. Will they suck? Maybe. But who is asking who here?

Just a thought.

What fans? Who are you speaking for ?

Ill stick to my original story:

The first 3 rule

The last 3 suck

He has practically tainted the first 3 with his constant tinkering

Let SW go George; it is over

I wll not buy the orginals on DVD. No mas Lucas, no mas.

I might have to get the originals on dvd so I can watch the bad roto (or whatever they called it then...retouching?) on the Kenobi-Vader saber duel....to remind myself that one can be shy of perfect and still move the world.

hehe... i get a kick out of how its so fasionable for low budget filmmakers to
dish on Lucas. The higher up you go, the more respect for the guy you find.

What he's done and continues to do, is unique. He runs a tight ship. Its
got style and its posh... an independent train set that Welles could only
dream of. I've seen other celebs and directors get starstruck around the
guy.. which is interesting cause he tends not to make eye contact with you.
Lucasfilm and its subsidiaries are considered one of the best companies to
work for in this or any other industry in the US. Want to take out the
company yacht? Can do.. its got a fulltime captain. Does your kid's daycare
provide horseback riding lessons?

Lucas has always understood that filmmaking doesnt end with the film's
end credits. Its also about the process, marketing, archive/library and
envrionment in which you work. Hes done it on his terms and he's
attracted top talent. I've never been more impressed with the calibre of
people that I've worked with, as much as I was in my time up in Marin.

You can slam the films and its really easy to dislike the prequels... but
at the end of the day.. Welles peaked and unless he's got an ace hidden
away, so did George as a filmmaker... now hes a businessman that we
should all study because although we may question the quality of his
latest works, never forget that he made a profit on each of the prequels
before they were even lensed. He's the only filmmaker on the planet to
ever do that consistantly.

loook he milking a dead horse he cant make live anymore. he a horrible fan based man. peter jackson great for fans. and those tiypes of films will get fans. supply and demand not suppply stupid incarnations and irritate something. he has beat the dead horse to death. too bad he cant wirte do anything else he might have successful but this star wars thing is stupid you know other director move on to bigger and better, some dont. he tried but failed case closed.

In the end, is it about making good movies, or good merchandise? He did have almost 20 years to think up sequels/prequels to the first trilogy and it was a tragic mess. Maybe it has to do with people around him not wanting to hurt his feelings and critiquing his ideas. I dont know but he did a lot better with Marcia Lucas and Gary Kurtz contributing on the first two. I have seen Friday the 13th sequels that were more watchable than the prequels. lol

BTW--I thought Lucas outsourced part of ILM to Singapore?

i dont like peter jackson i only like the frightners but i enjoyed the LOTR series and see hes moved on, unlike some epic creators.....
