30 seconds of IRL racing

Greetings all,


I'm cutting a video for a racing team. I wanted to put up the DVCPro files at full frame size, but they are huge... So, here's just a 30 second teaser. These aren't the race team shots we're using.. but good shots of some other cars. When I'm done and the client is cool with it, I'll post the whole 5 minute vid. Till then check it out and let's see if HDV can handle this kind of codec bashing swish pan whacky shooting...

Footage was shot at 720pn... crushing the blacks and not much else. No CC on these clips. Shot with a monopod and viewfinder. Focusing was tricking and took the first day just to get a handle on this as these friggin cars are flying by. I'll put up some of the open wheel experimental cars later.. that go like 250 mph.

Music is by Primus... Any and all feedback is good. Please download instead of streaming...

Good looking footage! HVX and racing are a perfect match, just like the DVX was in SD! Was there any slow motion there?

There are things I didn't like much, however:

1- The music. He's talking about racing, all right, but the music is not exciting at all.

2- You should get some closer shots and some crowd shots just to add that extra bit of "drama"

3- Try "different"camera angles, like "middle of the crowd", Pit-lane, Bridges (walkways), etc, in order to get those exciting "non-broadcast standard" shots..

Keep it up! Please be sure to post the more elaborate version!

EDIT- I would suggest you to watch a crappy movie, but it has the best racing sequences I've ever seen (specially the crash in the rain)

Thanks brothers. It's funny that you get comments about what else I should have shot, without even knowing the situation. I have 4 hours of racing footage. Tons of crowd stuff and shots from every corner of the track. from a variety of positions. This is just what I threw up last night as I wanted to share some motion and fast action stuff. Just a brief demo... when the final 5 minute piece is done, I'll throw that up if the client is cool with it.

The last rally car shot was at 60fps.. The indi car stuff through the chain link was 48fps... I shot some slow shutter stuff and then some high speed shutter stuff.. so we'll see how it all cuts together. I just really dread the selection process... 4 hours down to 5 minutes, plus I have to put in the shots that the client needs and wants even if I'm not a big fan of them...

Working for the man... but he's taking me to the Indi 500 and then to some race in Denver.... and although I don't like watching racing at all, it's pretty darn fun to shoot....

Thanks Pappas.. Racing does rock. I find your posts invaluable in giving me more info so I know that having your insight is awesome. Anymore tests and conclusions to share?
 
Not any new info at the moment except it appears for critical work 1080p on the HVX is a must. However that is nothing new, even Barry said the same thing.. I am setting up for buying an HVX200 it looks like ( need to find a good price though ), so I need to get a work flow path out of the way first. After that I hope to get some nice footage to share with everyone. If all goes well the HVX is going to become a project camera.

Pappas, what editing software are you using??
I have FCP, Edius and Raylight. Been shooting and
processing 1080 24pA and 1080 30p.

Have a few tips & tricks when you need them!

Man that was a slick spot. Looks fabulous indeed, but hightly affected and produced. Looks friggin wonderful indeed... glorious. But, it's not quite the same thing as what I was shooting. I would like to see some racing in uncontrolled conditions and also from about 100 feet away, zoomed all the way in.. and following a car traveling 190 MPH... Hard to tell how this spot was put together... but Man that cinemek adapter is great. When is that friggin thing coming out, is the question?

I will be shooting with the JVC this weekend again and the DP has given me some more ability to mess around and shoot something so I do want to give it a test.. especially since we are shooting driving car interiors... so should be a good chance to play...

Either way.. thanks for shariing peter. The cams are all good, I was just echoing sentiments I've heard here... so if I'm proven wrong, that's fabulous. I'm also the first to say that I'm going to be buying the single chip HD camera and a water-housing. For 2k, it's hard to beat that combo.. and I'd be so friggin' nervous putting the HVX in any water until it's atleast paid off... or has insurance...
