AJA Kona LHe or Blackmagic HD Extreme

Hi ftbt:

Why would you need analog HD in? I guess just for HDV stuff?

Dan

No, not just for that. In Pal land there's no other way for us to use the variable frame rates except to capture it trought the 1080i out option of the supplied component cable of the HVX. So having analog component in is important right now (at least for PAL users)

Matrox MXO will list for $995. Don't think you'll get 2K out of it but certainly 1920x1080. I saw it running both on desktop as well as Mac Book Pro. Presentation is definitely one of the strong suits of this baby-- shoot HVX and play out through the Matrox box to your projector.

Ned

Thanks Ned. I don't need 2K out of it, the projector will be 2K. Seems like the Matrox MXO box is what I'm going to use to show my stuff. All I need to do is upgrade to the 17" MacBook and get a FW800 SATA drive enclosure for it.

Is the Matrox MXO better than Aja Kona3? I am looking at buying the best for the money, bug free as I need 100% up time guarantee... Every minute counts and that is why I'll like to buy the best.

I will be using it with the HVX200 capturing footage at 720 24p.

Matrox or Kona 3?

Thank you for your help.

Different beasts altogether. The matrox is a simple DVI to Video converter. The Kona Card is a hardware card that can upscale and downscale materials, capture HD SDI, improve DVCPRO HD rendering in FCP (matrox does this differently, I presume), allows 4:4:4 editing, and so on.

The Kona card is for someone who needs not only to ingest dvcpro HD, but HDSDI, work with 4:4:4, uprez SD material, or film mastering.

The Matrox is a box that lets you use Video monitors (tv's, etc.) to monitor your edits in realtime, and lets you output your contents in realtime. Basically, it does only a bit of what the Kona 3 card does. The price is excelent, tough.

the only reason i'll be getting an mxo is so i can view dvcprohd footage on my video monitor using a laptop.

All I would want one of these cards for is the output. So now after checking out that Matrox MXO box I'm think that might be the way to go. It would be nice to bring your show with you on a MacBook Pro, hook it up to a 2K projector and let it rip. Of course I'm not sure its that easy. Does anyone know how much the Matrox MXO is going for?

I'm planning on getting a MacBook Pro soon, and I've been looking into ways to output to my Sony CRT monitor and a projector. The MBP has a DVI output port. Many projectors have a DVI input, so you can just connect up directly. For those with an HDMI port instead, you can get a DVI-to-HDMI adapter for about $25. For projectors/ monitors that have a Y,Pr,Pb component input, you can use the DVI to VGA adapter that comes with the MBP and then use a transcoder like the Audio Authority 9A60 to convert to component. This is a $140 product, compared with $995 for the Matrox MXO.

If you're just looking for a way to output a signal for presentation, I'm not sure what benefit the Matrox MXO has over these lower cost options.

The Christy 2K does have a DVI input on it. My only problem as I see it is getting audio off of the DVI conection.
