DVX-made film on MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Hey everyone,
My short film UNDERCUT has made it into the top 5 of the MTV movie awards (under their new student films category. Most importantly, it was shot on a DVX-100, which was able to handle 101degree summer heat for 16 days straight.
It's a ninja political satire filled with hong-kong calibur martial arts action.

Check out the movie here:

And if you like it, give it a vote here:

Thanks!

Damn, the fight scenes were fantastic! Especially the shot of the very first kick when the camera went into the van.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the support guys!

People have been really helpful, and a few big names have noticed. Phil Tippet studios sent the voting around because I plugged "Starship Troopers" on MTV, among some others. Undercut is the only movie shot for no money, no crew and on a DVX (others had large budgets and were shot on film).

Ninja Dog thanks you.

now THATS what Im talkin about. Great editing, I could tell where the story was going. Damn funny. You know how to tell a story with pictures and that is something not many people can do!

AMAZING

some of the lighting was a bit weak, but the action and well executed script overshadow it... (pun)

Good stuff. Did you guys spend much time storyboarding/rehearsing those fight scenes? Stunt coordinator? Someone on set must have experience doing those style of martial arts stuff, because you guys pulled it off beautifully.

Ya,
This movie was extremely planned out beforehand. Every single thing that happens, every shot and camera movement, was plotted out months in advance. I basically had a binder filled with a really poorly drawn looking comic book of the movie. Half the fighting was planned out beforehand, like keyframes (ie they exchange 5 hits each, two shots later he uses the candy machine candy as a weapon), and the stunt choreographer would fill it in with what kind of kick or fall would look best. The martial arts was from a martial arts group known as "The Stunt People."

The lighting is the definate major weakness. We did what we could with what we had. And we don't know anybody with lights or lighting knowledge. There was no crew on this movie. It was always just the actors and me. Very guerilla. And as important as lighting is to enhance mood, add credability and just be "nice," something Steven Speilberg said always stuck with me:
When he looks for aspiring directors to work with, he doesn't care about lighting. He just cares about whether they can tell a story or not.

Not saying Speilberg will ever go near seeing this and not to undermine the power of good lighting. It's just a decent sounding excuse for us being poor and talentless in the education of such things =P

So the lighting wasn't up to par... But who gives a crap??? That was a fun frickin film! I watched it and forgot or didn't even think about all the little glitches. You grabbed my attention and kept me in the film. That's a sign of success.

I also checked out the "Behin Undercut" clip and that was also a great watch. You have something going for you.

I have to add that the action sequences were very well done. The camera movement and choreography reminded me of Jackie Chan movies. Fun, cool action.

Nice work.

Hey, they just aired this on MTV today; interviews w/ the filmmakers:
To watch videos you need to install a non-standard plugin. Argh. Oh well.

Btw - Technically, that is not MTV. It's mtvU which is a college channel owned by MTV networks.

Man, that's f*cking brilliant! You're a genious! Too bad youtube quality suck. I'd like to watch the DVX in all it's glory.

Hey, it's Todd! Haven't seen him in a while. What's up with Kwoon?

Doesn't matter right now. That was pretty freaking good. I really liked some of the shots with the fight scenes. Really creative and energetic stuff. The whole thing reminded me a lot of anime style stuff in real life, in a very very good way.

Really cool man.

Hey, ya, small world. That is Todd Roy, and he's up to some neat Kwoon stuff. He has a two hour TV special going up in Europe. I think there are details on his website.

Speaking of which, Todd is the one who helped us with the new press-release website for Undercut that just went up last night
www.UndercutMovie.com

It was also his idea to throw up on me in that "vote" skit. We filmed it yesterday. Chewed up fake puke got down my pockets. Nasty.

Congrats! I applaud you for taking something from start to finish.

Some crtiques...

The lighting was weak.
The Stunts were AWESOME!
The audio was so-so
The Camera work was very good
The acting was over-the-top, but appropiate
The writing was AWESOME!
The image quality was poor, but that was probably due to a over compression

All in all, you did a really good job. I think if you focus on the weak points, you have a shot at going places. Good luck and keep up the great work.
