safe way to purchase water housing

I've found this manufacturer of water housings for my dvx100, they custom build the housing but I need to send it to San Diego to do this. I've checked the re-seller ratings and they aren't listed, i'm looking for some assurance that this will go through as planned, and mainly that my I get my camera back. What would a safe approach to this scenario be?

A safe aproach?
Don't do it.
No way.
I wouldn't do it.

If they need your camera than that means the housing they're building for you is a prototype.

Agreed. If they've been in business since 1996 (as their website claims) they would've seen a DVX before now.

Edit: They even show their housing for the DVX, why the hell would you need to send yours to them?!

So true, even equinox, at dive-equinox.com asked for the fisheye lens to fit the housing. It seems the norm with these water housing folks, and this company has a rep going for them. What to do, what to do.

Welcome to the world of water photography, there are thousands of cameras on the market and this is a highly specialized area. How many water photogs/videgraphers do u know? This is why there aren't many manufacturers of housings. The reason they need it is, they've done this camera before, But it's not like they have it on hand u know. I'm checking into there business, and will work it out before hand.

Cheers for the heads up

I know people who have used this company and they are 100% professional. You sign a paper agreement when you send your equipment and theres nothing wrong with it. I agree its scary that you don't kow how they are handling it but all video shot in major surf movies use the splash type water housing. It isn't rated very deep b/c its designed to capture video at the surface such as surfing, water skiinging and so on. This company builds some nice housings. Another water housing website you can look at is Delmar Waterhousings. Type "Delmar Waterhousings" into a google search and you'll get some results.

SPL is one of the leading underwater housings used by some of the worlds best surf and water sport photographers. These housings are custom made on request so need the camera to ensure correct fit. They would have moulds for the most populars stills cameras however video cameras such as the DVX100 are not as popular in that field.

As 3CCD mentioned you can try Delmar (they made my stills housing), or Photographic Support Systems.

Cheers,

Mark

It is scary sending the camera off, but after a few letters to some photogs I was confident in doing business with SPL. It took less than a week to complete my housing, and cheaper than expected.

Del MAr on the other hand has been having difficulties, see http://www.underwaterphotography.com/Forum/default.asp?Thread=5893

Erik emailed me about this, and assured me it was being taken of. He pointed out that these few people ordered a special housing that took longer than expected and he got backed up. I was pretty set on going with him until i saw this thread, and backed away in a hurry.

So hopefully my Spl housing arrives today, now i just need to get in shape.
