first of all, sorry for posting this in the general technical area, i know there is a specific section for audio (and i posted there as well) but im really hoping to get some simple answers before my shoot tonight.

I'm filming a stage performance and i'll be plugging into the soundboard (with only one xlr cable). can you record two channels of audio through one line from the soundboard into input 2 by having both channel 1 and channel 2 set to input 2? i know you can do this with an external mic, but does it work for a line in (i didnt find an answer in the manual or dvx book).

if you can't do this, does it make a difference if you have the line into input 1 or input 2, and also, does it matter if your "mic power"s are on or off?

thanks so much.

Plug the XLR into input 2, set both channels to 2, turn off your phantom power and set both inputs to "line level". You should be good to go.

ive done this before for the band flipsyde ( a san francisco hiphop/rockish group) and i never have turned off phantom power, what is the advantage to that?

It's just not necessary when running from the sound board. You only need it on if you're using a mic that requires phantom power to operate (condensers, etc.).

If that wont work just record audio to one channel and pan in post.

yeah i was gonna say that. My laptop has a beachtek xlr box that i sometimes use and capture directly from soundboard to audacity in mono then just copy the signal later.

As for the phantom power i figured that what you meant, just didnt know if there was any other advantage. :)
