A good way to solve the problem of mounting cranes to tripods would be to design a simple, inexpensive pedestal that mounts to 75, 100mm or 150mm bowls, with a swivelling crane mount on the top. Maybe an 18" high pedestal to boost the max height of the crane. This way, you could buy a set of old workhorse sticks for cheap on ebay, and mount the crane pedestal to them easily.
Any machinists out there? I'll buy the first one!

the glidecam crane mounts directly to your sticks. it has it's own panning mechanism. i own one and it is very fluid. i use a cheap set of bescor sticks with a ground spreader. i have used it this way many many times and never a problem. the total weight of the jib, camera and weights is around 70 lbs.

Fluid heads are designed to carry weight in a vertical axis. a crane/jib moves the center of gravity and thus the moment way, way forward
I think you may be confusing geometric center with center of gravity. The balance point is at the center of gravity, but may not be (as in the case of a jib) at the geometric center. While the geometric center may be forward of the head, there's no need to worry about the geometric center. The head only sees the forces of the center of mass (center of gravity). If the jib is properly balanced with a counterweight, the center of gravity (balance point) will be directly over the center of the head.

Advanta Jib

Advanta Jib

Any votes for the recently introduced Advanta Jib? I saw one at DV Expo in December, and it looked pretty slick. The hydrolic head seemed smooth, responsive, and easy to operate. I don't own one, but am leaning in that direction. Any users have any comments?

Best,
Christopher

What's going on here!?!?!?!?!

Guys, click this link...

http://www.dykortech.com/

Dude, this guy's jib is 1700 bucks for the the standard 4 foot reach and with all the extras including an underslung head it's under 2500 bucks.

Look at the head on this thing. It puts EVERY other jib in this price range to shame.

Seriously. And it's easy as hell to use.

I second rook. I saw the Dykortech (Advanta-jib Lite) first hand at NAB, and it is an amazingly simple and innovative design.

I third Rook...and second Jonathan... Great design. Features that no one else has. Do any of those other jibs even have a pan/tilt head built in? Very professional product. If your're on the market for a jib, you should seriously check this one out.

I'm looking to purchase a crane soon. This thread has really got me thinkin! I think it's great the guys from kessler and ezjib rolled through and answered some questions.

Hi this is John at Dykortech Ltd. I designed the Advanta-Jib and A-J Lite.
I know you guys are just blowing smoke up my a*s and I do appreciate the nice comments, but words like " put others to shame" are just not necessary.
I agree with Steve at EZFX , that different jibs are designed for specific tasks and budgets. You wouldn't use a Cobra crane to hold a 100lb Panavision camera and a Technocrane to shoot an indie short with the DVX100.
All that us jib guys wanna do is to free your camera from the confines of your tripod. I'm also open to any questions or comments. Thanks

the dykortech looks like it swivels from left to right also with the up and down at the head, am i correct? That would be a big plus for me. You could do suedo dollly moves I think.

Hi John, I saw the AJ setup at DV Expo. It was worth my flight to LA. Very nice.

I have the Canon XL H1. Not sure which option to use for the remote. Is the AJ Lite Panasonic LANC compatible with the XL H1? Is the wiring for the AJ Lite LANC bundled into the wiring/hydrolic coil? Is the AJ Lite compatible with the Canon ZR-2000? Can the AJ Lite Lite be purchased without LANC, and then add the ZR-2000?

Best,
Christopher

Edit: I just reread the product description. I think only the LANC extension is included in the basic package. If that is the case, is the LANC extension compatible with the ZR-2000?

LANC for A-J Lite

LANC for A-J Lite

Hi Chris, thanks

The Advanta-Jib Lite does come with a remote extension built in with the hydraulic coil along with an RCA video extension for the monitor. The remote extension uses 2.5mm minijacks and is compatible with both Sony's LANC and Pani's remote version. The LANC system is also used by Canon. I shot a few open heart surgeries a couple of months ago with the H1 and I used my ZR-1000 . The ZR-2000 is just an updated version with more functions but they all work with the same stereo minijacks.

thanks again
John

Hey John,
If your still around these parts im just wondering how the head of the jib achieves its panning motion? Is this done by cables and if so how freely does it move considering the length of the cables?
Also im just wondering how much a complete setup will be not including tripod, monitor or wiring? Are these available in Australia?
Thanks mate
