Question
I just finished shooting my Iraq scenes for my short film
and I wanted more of a private ryan look like when they hit the beach in the film.
I only have Final cut express HD and Imovie any suggestions?
I shot 24p 1/500

Not sure if FCE has the option of using magic bullet filters, you could try that or do it by hand (I'd prefer). Put your clip on the timeline, copy and paste it on top of the original clip. Then the clip on top, right click it and overlay the clip. Giving you more room to play with the whites, mids, blacks, sat., and to add filters and so on. If you have a screen grab I could show you what I'm talking about. Good luck

I'm interested in what your talking about too.... I have my CC methods, but i want to know how you do this overlay thing. Do you change the opacity levels?

You can play with the opacity level, but I use the CC filter. I play with the Highs, Mids, Blacks, and the Sat.

A big part of the 'Private Ryan' scenes was the shutter speed they shot it with. That's kind of hard to recreate that effect in post.

Other than that, your best bet is CC.

Desaturate at least 50%, and increase contrast pretty much. Maybe throw in some slightly yellow highlights and greenish shadows.

Well, he did shoot at 1/500. So he should be ok with that. I'd play around with CC too. There is a 'bleach bypass' filter in the Magic Bullet Looks, but it's usually a little strong.
