Can anyone shed light on why it's recommended not to use these tapes in the HVX-200? It's just that I have 3 Boxes of them and seems a pity not to use them.

Come on guys,

Its been sometime now since the original post and still haven't had an answer. Can someone who's going to NAB maybe track down an answer for me. PLEASE.

Regards

Rich

I don't think it is particular to the HVX but I try not to use the longer tape if I can avoid it just because in order to get the extra footage of tape into the shell, the manufacturer is forced to use a thinner grade of tape that is more succeptable to stretching. If you do run the longer tape, I would make sure to record at least an extra 30sec of bars at the head and try not to shoot to the tail as these are the areas that are most at risk if a tape does stretch.

True, usually i dont use the first 30 sec of the tapes.
will use to record color bar.
especially when doing my coporate or wedding shoot in singapore.
i try to record the first 30 sec of my tapes on color bar.
and i try not to use the last 1 min.
always rewind your tapes after shoot.
and break tapes( i am sure u know ) to prevent recording on it.

The HVX Manual specifically says DO NOT USE the longer tapes! (but gives no justifiable reason within the manual). I realise the tape is thinner but to date haven't had any problems with the 83's in my DVX and my reason's for asking the question was to find out if the head drum lace up procedure is more complex than the DVX hence the warning not to use the tape. Then I'd probably not use the longer tapes, but if the only reason not to use the tape was because of possible stretching then I'll take my chances and use the 3 boxes I still have from stock.

The question really does still stand unanswered in my book. So come on Jan give us the reason(s) why we shouldn't record onto the longer tapes?
