Question about mono/stereo recording with shotgun mic

Here's a stupid question- after you've recorded with a shotgun mic, which records in mono, how do you bump it to stereo?

You don't want your audio just coming out of one side of the tv/computer/headphones, etc.

I know it wouldn't be true stereo to just double a mono signal, but what does everyone do out there who uses (mono) shotgun mics?

Excited about my new dvx 100b,

if your audio track is panned center it will come out both speakers but you can also copy the track to an empty track in your NLE and then do a really slight pan left / pan right to get a little wider spread.

1) If you plug your mic in input 2, you can set both of your channels to read input 2. bam. instant stereo.

2) What NLE are you using? In PP, you go to Clip>audio options>break out to mono clips. This creates a left mono and a right mono. Delete the right mono and the left mono will still play on both sides.

thanks for the info. thought i tried putting both to input 2 before and it didn't work, but it's crackin' now!

also, what the heck is a NLE? and PP?

another question- what software do you use? Final Cut Pro? Thinking about getting it but it's so pricey. Currently just have Imovie.

Thanks again for the help

you can also just edit your footage, export the raw with the mono audio and then demutiplex it and import the audio into audacity (a free windows audio editing application) then copy the right (or left) channel and insert it into the empty channel to create stereo. But, for future refrence do as rubop said. Also, i dont know if im correct on this, but technically isnt dialog SUPPOSED to be a mono track? Also, when editing for a 5.1 project you can choose where you want the audio to come out of (what speaker) and you would place your dialog track in the center speaker. :)

NLE-Non Liner Editor (something like thtat). Basically its what us dorks call an editing program just so we can impress the girls.

PP-Adobe Premiere Pro. Sorta like Final Cut Pro, but for the PC. Dont ask which one is better, because they are set up differently. Use the search function to see what each is like. This is also true for a lot fo questions you might ask. There are some people on here that like to haze the new guys and will give a bashing if you ask a common question.

That was funny.

Yeah, that would be pretty lame to haze somebody in here. This is a great forum for everybody.
