no redundancy with Firestore or Cineporter?

So is anyone asking the question "What happens when the hard drive dies...?" in regards to either of these products? I've had drives go bad just sitting in the edit suite, no production abuse necessary. Same risk with the P2 store, right? Since we don't have a true HD tape backup option with the HVX, I would be very reluctant to trust any of these products with critical footage if I intended to wipe and reuse the P2 media. My approach is going to be to use a Powerbook with PC slot to offload the footage to a mirrored RAID 1, probably my existing OWC 500 Gig FW800/400 for now, maybe upgrading to a 1Tb unit as needed. Or am i missing something, and these products are safer than I think? I'd be glad to find out I'm wrong, but 1 hard drive does not redundancy make.

Editing on West Coast since 1979. From 2 inch to 1 inch to D2 to D1 to Digi Beta to various HD formats, 16, Super 16, 35, Super 35, Agfa, Fuji, Kodak, Edit-Droid, Mirage, CMX, LightWerks, Axial..... and all continents.. There's always a failure. Somewhere, somehow, someone, someway. That's what makes us better than the rest.....dealing with it and moving on. Accepting the challenge and making art from mistakes. Finding that an over-exposed take can be color-corrected, screwed with and later copied and proclaimed as brilliant. We must take risks, we must push the inventors to keep on, we must re-invent the cut!

Lets figure out the problems, use it, guide the designers to give us updated and better tools and high-five someone at NAB one year and say "remember when we wished they would make..........". A tapeless world and you're on the cusp. Figure it out, re-direct the complaining into brilliance. Buy it, lose money, do it again and one day have too much to worry about. It works. God bless Firestore and CinePorter and all the future vapor technology that is here today!!

Complaining is not what my post is about. Sure, it's great that Firestore and Cineporter are out there providing more storage. But if you're going tapeless, you've got to come to terms with the limitations of hard drives and make plans for WHEN they fail, not if. I think the tapeless thing is great, but I'm also going to have a plan that anticipates failures rather than reacts after they've happened. Just wondered if anyone else if having the same questions I am.

There WILL be a redundancy option with Cineporter. At least according to here (first paragraph under "Overview").

RAID 3? Doesn't that just mean that the data is split in half over 2 drives? Or does it make 2 copies of the data?

I'm getting my RAID definitions mixed up. :D

RAID 0 is striped with data distributed across the drives (fastest). RAID 1 is mirrored with all data written to both drives (slowest, but safest). RAID 3 though, usually requires a minimum of 3 drives to implement, since two are striped together and the third is a parity drive, which means its space is used to protect the data on the other two (or more). Not really sure how Cineporter can do RAID 3 with only two drives. Anyone?

It's RAID 1 Guys. The Data will be mirrored between the two drives. Same speed internally as 1 drive.
