What can you use the Pre-Record for?

Our HVX has the option of recording up to 7 seconds BEFORE you hit record. How is the useful, for shooting lightning.
Guess what, tonight we had lightning and I was so excited. So I took the camera out, set it in position, had 3 strikes but I had to adjust to get the area just right. After centering on the action...NO MORE LIGHTNING! Arrg.
Later we had more. So I got in position and NO MORE LIGHTNING again.
What are the friggin odds???:crybaby:

We don't get cool lightning here in the Central Valley very often and it doesn't last long. But man, next time I'll be ready!

I did get 2 far off strikes way off center, but not what I was hoping for. Man this would be cool to get a good storm and shoot some HD lightning.

How are some of you guys using the Pre-Record feature?

I think the original benefits were in ENG where you could get some reaction (or some such) that happened before the record button was pressed.

This is a great feature, but not available with Firewire capture or Firestore or DV, right? And is it possible to use it wiht 1080p/24?

pre record is for news camera ops

pre record is for news camera ops

The people who benifit the most are news shooters who wait around all day for a shot of somebody coming out of a courthouse. They don't know when so they burn through 8 hours of tape. But just likeshooting lightning they still have to be on the ball. I would think any documentary would benifit from this feature.
enjoy.
