Newbie Footage.. Beach, airport, time lapse..

Got the camera about a week ago, thought I'd post a bit of footage..
Just got final cut pro yesterday, so sorry about the edit! No color correction, because I don't know how to do it, and think the camera looks great without any..

It's not a masterpiece.. just a bit of what I have learned.. Like I need a head with a bit more resistance, a 1st AC would be nice!, and it's really hard to follow a 727 at full zoom!!!

Let me know what you think.. Criticism is not needed, but helpful advice is always welcome...

Hi,
Please don't take what I have to say as criticism; it’s not my intention to do that, but to help you by giving you a few suggestions.

I had a problem watching the first shot, because it was in slow mo and you follow the ball, but you don't correctly follow the ball so it gives me an uncomfortable blur effect, it would have been more effective as a static shot, or keeping the camera following the ball at all times, or slower camera movements.

You follow the ball in the 2nd shot a lot better, because my attention was on the ball the whole shot, I didn't feel disorientated, and the shot of the kid catching the ball was even better still. I don't know if you had the colourful umbrellas there on purpose, but they are amazing, great choice in terms of the mise en scene.

There might be a better way to get slow motion; hopefully someone with the camera can explain this as I have no idea.

There is something about cutting to the go karts that didn’t work for me. They seem underexposed, totally different to the beach scene. When you figure out colour correction you might be able to ease it a bit better.

Same with the planes, there is a really dull haze grey effect to them.
I agree about the planes, very shaky, but practise and good tripod will improve this.

Then I saw the shot where you see the car pass in the window first, then by the street... WOW, this is an amazing shot well done. The composition is very nice with the use of foreground mid and back. Very clever.

I really like the angle of the maroon range rover. A bit shaky though.

The wobbly bar. Then the cut to the close up of it was irritating. I guess the shakiness didn’t help it, if you have after effects there is a plug-in called "shake removal" other wise I would delete the shot.

Nice framing the cars through the archway.

Nice time lapse. Good choice of music.

Overall I enjoyed it, (or I would have closed it and never made this post).

Did you intend for it to tell a story, like a series of metaphors, or is it just a bunch of stuff together? I kind of felt something from it, it was good. Keep up doing it and you will improive.

What mode did you shoot with?

Hey!Great clip. i liked it!
1.Whats the name of the Track?
2.ST is right bout his remarks...but its all a matter of trial and error...when you experiment more with your new toy :]
3.I felt as it was a different video since the plane bit ended-and the car+wondow part started. Movie had a different feel. Did you shoot 24p or 30?60i? and the nightshot....-was it a special 1frame per second? or u shot normaly?
4.loved the AC\DC skaterboy part. was it all directed? :]

keep it up :]

Hey guys :-)

ST Thanks for the the info.. I am always learning and will never turn down helpful information..

THE BEACH
720pN 60fps (forgot the shutter) Both ND's shooting at about a 5.6
Zoomed all the way in, following a fast moving ball, and trying to keep focus is pretty hard stuff.. Practice makes perfect... :-) If you watch the clip again, watch the kid pick up the ball next to the topless hottie, then watch his reaction... KIDS!!

AIRPORT
720pN 24fps 180dgre shtr. both ND's, fully zoomed in, at about a 8.
As for the airport shots.. The color was what I was looking for (crazy huh?).. a bit dirty and rusty... I know the camera can handle the colorful world of the beach.. so I wanted a dirty look (smoke stacks in the BG etc...) The go carts was the same feel.. cold.. dreamy.. I know I wont get the best cinematographer award for it.. Testing is part of the fun... :-)
It was a bit much, a needs a tighter edit.. I totally AGREE!!

Other exterior shots..
720pN, 24fps, 60fps
This was my test on playing with the white balance.. Came out pretty nice for shooting at around 3pm with harsh daylight.. The camera handles AMAZINGLY with hot spots blaring!

TIME LAPSE (still learning this)
720p 30 Interval setting at 3s
much easier to me when shooting 35mm.. with a METER!
I was very unsure on how to open up without it looking like I am, any hits would be GREAT! (taking the ND's out while shooting is a biachhh!)

As for the edit..
I just through the clips together.. First night with FCP so it was all about learning....... but towards the end, I got a bit more into it.. BGundu is correct in the name of the song "if I fall" by AquaLung..

None of the shots were staged.. well except for the planes taking off.. I had them go on "Background!" :-)

Anymore questions or comments, please feel free.. :-)
Thanks again ST for the info... anything and everything helps.. It's why we are all here.. Well that and you all are so COOL!

I TOTALLY noticed that, even before reading your post about it. What a grin. :D

I really liked the last part of the clip, from the point past the airplanes on. The beach looked really colorful, but the clip just seemed to come alive with better shots in the latter half. I love my DVX and all, but boy do I wish I had one of these babies. Nice work for your first time out.

I thought the kids in the beach scene were just great...kind of reminds me of myself as I play with the HVX...just a big grin on my face as I play with my new toy. :-) Very genuine feeling to it. The skateboarding scene was cool too. Seeing everyone's time lapse stuff makes me want to try it..if I just had the patience :-). What setting did you use?
Considering that your learning FCP and HVX all at the same time, I would say it's all pretty amazing. I know exactly how you feel as to trying to keep things in focus, while following the action and making sure your color is good on a bright sunny day while handholding that fattie.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I thought so myself.. :-)
I was on manual of course, and Scene file #6.. Thats about it..
Did some stuff in 24pN and some in 30p @ 60 fps..

Lets see some of yours! :-)

Nice crew boat footage!! Very dreamy! Handheld is tough with this beefy girl ;-) at least 60fps is a bit more forgiving..

I was watching your 2fps footage and I saw you have a valentine one (you must be a serious speeder :) ). How do you like it?

Love the Valentine ONE, it's worth every PENNY! I LOVE THE ARROWS!!! It tells you what direction the cop is coming from! GENIUS!!!

Thanks tradur, I'm shooting a short film with a different camera next week and I'm nervous.. I have a bunch of lights and a million setups.. I know I will do well, I just want to shoot it already!!!!!!!
