Transferring Video

Quick question, my Z1U has to be sent back because of a bad firewire port on the camera, but I need to upload some video to my computer. Will a standard MiniDV camcorder upload HDV video correctly until I get my Z1U back? Thanks for any information.

John

From my understanding, the answer is no. You would have to have a deck or camera that can play back HDV.

Yeah, an HDV deck is going to be the only way to go.

I've had 2 firewire ports go out on 2 other sony cameras that I've owned. I bought an extended warranty with an authorized sony repair dealer, and they will not repair it, stating that I applyed excess voltage while plugigng it into the comptuer. Go figure.

This is the kind of service you can expect from Sony, but hey! You spent half as much as the other HVX guys, so don't sweat it. You are still ahead.

That's weird. I've only had one other Sony camera before my FX1 and I still use it to import via firewire every once in a while with no problems at all.

I bought it back in 1999.

DV, yes, HDV, no. HDV is recorded differently than DV.

Heath, I'm well aware of the fact that HDV is recorded differently than DV, but what exactly does that have to do with a firewire port going out?

Are you saying that HDV applies a higher voltage through the firewire port when transferring data and thus the ports are blowing out???

I only had one firewire port go bad, on a Digital8 cam, and that's because I accidentally jammed the 4 pin cable into the camera the wrong way. I think a lot of people unknowingly kill their ports this way. The grooves in the 4 pin are only supposed to fit one way, but some ports have too much give, and it's easy to slide it in wrong.
