The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

It's displaying component HD? Can you post some pictures of the setup? Also, which monitor did you get and where? There are 3 in this thread.

Yes, the transcoder converts the component HD signal to VGA. Here are some pix. I got the 7" Lilliput monitor off ebay. Ebay Item number 8772841266 is the same monitor. One of my clients has the 4:3 8" version and it works well as an over the lens teleprompter, so I didn't want to take a chance on a brand I hadn't used before.

I just ordered the Liiliput.

Thanks for all the info. This is great..now I can have BOTH a camera mounted focus assist and the panny 17" for color accuracy too!

hey, where did you get your eye piece cover? I've been looking for one of those!

I haven't used any batteries with the Lilliput because I got to use as an over the lens teleprompter, so I am always in a controlled situation with plenty of shore power. But, this thing from Markertek that was listed earlier looks promising:

http://www.markertek.com/Product.asp?baseItem=DELV%2DBPSY&cat=EXPENDABLE&subcat=BATTERIES&prodClass=BATMNTS&mfg=&search=0&off=

The monitor doesn't flip the image, but it has one of those sliding type mounts on the back that a lot of that type of monitors have, so it would be easy to just spin the monitor.

The "monkey butt" eye piece shammy is from FilmTools.com.

the price is also very nice US$ 49.90
Liksang can be trusted, the site is one of the biggest game import sites of the world.
I just ordered the converter, I'll let you know how it works on my 23" sony tft. If that works well I'm already happy. But the marshall seems the way to go if you want a proven solution

I just ordered two for my 17" monitors. I'll wait and see if anyone has a solution for battery power before I order another 7" monitor.

Larry,
I know I showed up late to this thread, but how did you mount the Lilliput to the HVX? And when you say the monitor can "spin", what exactly do you mean? I have the M2 adapter and am really looking for an on-camera monitor to assist with focus and will display the image right side up. Would you recommend the Lilliput? And where do I find the transcoder? Thanks.

Hello Chris,

I mounted the monitor with an Israili arm I bought from Jerry at http://www.jbkcinequipt.com/ His item no. 10201ST. I had to add a clamp he sells that clamps onto the 15mm rods and has a reciever for the 3/8" spud on the Istaili arm to raise the arm a bit. The HVX is taller than the DVX, so I need to get the monitor a little higher.

I have an M2 as well, that's why I had to set up an on camera monitor in the first place. In fact, if you look at the top of the page on the http://www.redrockmicro.com/ site, you will see my first rig. I also wrote some of the artcles on that site.

I tried setting the camera's component output to 480I and plugging the green cable into the video in on my NTSC LCD to get a B&W image, but the monitor just wasn't cutting it. It has always worked fine for DV, but it just wasn't sharp enough for HD. I was resolved to the fact that was going to need to buy the Marshall. But, with this rig, I may never have to do that.

The monitor has a slot in the back that a square nut goes into that you mount the stand onto. Like this one

That way, you can mount something to the square nut and spin the monitor upside down for use with the M2.

The Lilliput is the only brand of little VGA monitor I have used, so I don't have any other reference, but it works just fine. Very usable for focus. The transcoder is the one shown on page 3 of this thread. You can find it here:
http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=219&products_id=4233&

Hope that helps.

Larry,

Have you tried the transcoder to a 4:3 monitor? I'm curious as to whether it shows the viewfinder image, complete with all the display information (frame rates, P2 capacity) and such.

Having a component mirror of the Panasonic's LCD on the Lilliput 8" monitor might be nice.

Hello Lars and Overland,

Sorry for the slow reply. I have been out of town on a shoot all week. The transcoder only works with HD, so you can send it either 720 or 1080 signals.

If you send the signal to a 4:3 monitor, the image is stretched vertically to fit. So, everybody gets tall and skinny. And yes, you can send the all the display info to the VGA monitor. Very handy.

I just ordered the liliput 7" I will update next week when it arrives. I will show pictures of the screen and will look into a battery solution.

I tried to order one of the VD-Z3's but they are out of stock and they have a very poor home page with no way to contact anyone but e-mail, which they haven't answered yet. Also the forum there is full of complaints about the same problems I ran into as far as stock and contacting problems. So I can't order the 700YV monitor untill I know I can get the VD-Z3 to hook it up with. Hopefully the guy(s) who run the VD-Z3 site will get back with me soon. In the meantime anyone else have any links to a product that will do the same thing that the VD-Z3 does?

David

OK Vdig electronics home page is back up and running (link below) and they have the VD-Z3's in stock. I ordered two, I'll use them with my 17" studio and 7" Lillput LCD monitors and let you guys know how they work.

I tried to order from Lik-sang http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=219&products_id=4233& but they want me to jump through a bunch of hoops for them as far as needing a bank check etc so I passed and went with the VD-Z3, which is probably the same unit anyway. With all the video/computer equipment I have ordered and paid for I've never had the kind of trouble I had with Lik-Sang.

I'm gonna start calling this forum the "Five Hundred Dollar Website" because every thread I read I buy the stuff they're all talking about and it's at least that much to move on to the next. Got my 7" Lilliput, transcoder, Bescor battery and assorted adapters and cables and spent.....yup. Anyway, it's good, not great, but a better focus near the camera than the on-boards and looks cool as well. I'll post pics soon, but remember, I'm and editor, so my pics won't be as nicley lit and backdropped as you guys'.

Thanks to all and especially Larry for the effort and patience.

Can you get a good sense of the image with this setup, or is it strictly a focus aid? Do I need to get the Marshall if I want to use the lcd for focus AND exposure/image tweaks?

Using the Marshall again yesterday, it's not perfect -- some significant moire happens when it downrezzes the HD signal to its 800x480 display. So I'd still say it's a pretty darn good monitor for the price, but there's that caveat: FOR THE PRICE.
