Hey PAL users, I've gotten a few messages from users claiming that Final Cut Pro is unable to do direct capture from the HVX-200 to for example a laptop when using the 1080/50i setting. Well, so this is wrong. - To help you on your way, I'm posting screenshots of my settings in FCP. And just a note, I haven't done this in any earlier versions of FCP than v.4.5 (HD)

Now, to get to this, you need adjust a few settings. First: If you have a pirated version of Final Cut Pro there are plenty of technical reasons (regarding codecs) that might cause this to not work. Second: The absolute easiest way to do this if you're a HVX users, is this:

Backup and delete your prefefrences in /home/Library/Prefrences/Final Cut Pro Userdata

Connect the HVX via Firefire, turn it on, set the camera to P2, 1080/50i.

Restart Final Cut Pro (with your HVX connected)

Now you just choose 1080/50i in the pulldown menu when FCP asks what settings you would like to use with FCP. When doing this, FCP also matches the default Sequence, Capture, Device and A/V settings. - Lastly, I perferr to use the 'Uncontrolable device" with Final Cut Pro because FCP keeps crashing when I try controll the HVX in HD mode.

Notice that FCP says "no communication", still I'm able to record the image. This is due to 'uncontrollable device'
