Music Video Shoot in Philly Dvx100A + Mini 35

This wasn't too shabby. The shots look great. The only complaint I would have is the cookie cutter style. Its a typical rock video, albeit a very well done one.

Hey all--

I'm Ariella- the director of the video.
Thanks for all the awesome feedback. I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can:

If the video won't work for you, you need the latest Quicktime (Quicktime 7) for the H.264 compressor. It is a free download.

The adapter we used was the technic adapter and we have a set of primes we got for an awesome deal in Handheld Films in NY! (Check them out!)

The location was an abandoned factory- guerilla style. :) A cop came by because of all the ruckus but didn't even bother..

We used an HMI and a couple 1K arris, that is it. we got lucky with the lighting naturally there and the lights were just accents for most of the shots, save for the blasting HMI in the back of course (we placed it in the same position as the sun, so working at the same time they gave us a much more prominant effect).

Thanks all!

I'm looking forward to my next one- I'm still in college and learning so I really picked up a lot of tips from doing this and especcially when people give you feedback like on this message board- it helps me prepare for creative choices in the future.

ariella,

good to see you got the projected finished. I was wondering if it was finished the other day and then happened to find it on here. The mini35 looks great. I'll be back in the states in less then 2 weeks, shoot me an email if you got time.

hey Andrew! What a coincidence- I'm meeting all these people I know here. I checked out your photo blog recently on Italy- it looks great! Sounds like it turned out to be a great experience. I'll email you soon.

Video clip not working. Keep getting this ku-kop sound.:furious3: when I click on the picture.

Hey there...my very first post here on the forum (Yay!). In case you haven't figured it out yet, that sound is your pop-up blocker preventing the window with the video from appearing.

As far as the photography on the video it looks great. The director is learning and I'm sure the videos will become less of what we've all seen on mtv and will become more like what we see on mtv2's "Subterranean" (i.e. more original in telling the story). But then again I believe that better music lends itself to better videos since it hits the emotions harder...so next time better music will help you make a better video. Although for you still being in college and doing this level of work is quite impressive. Everyone involved, keep at it.

Ha Ha I've figured that out awhile back. I forgot I installed another pop-up blocker software. The one I already had displayed a message in the toolbar.

I got chance to see the video and it was nice. I wonder how cold it was when they shot that video? I saw the crew was dressed to keep warm.

Heh. Yeah it was cold! I was wearing my DP's clothes overtop mine because I didn't have enough layers on the 2nd day. He's bigger than me so I looked like an overstuffed mushroom. I learned that next time I'm going to prepare- gods I hate winter shoots!!

Oh, and as far as the video lacking concept. I had a solid one but I guess it wasn't solid enough, it fell through mostly because of the art direction. I need to look for professional art directors in the area. But you're right, and that's the main reason I'm not happy because I don't think it's my style.

But at the same time, I wasn't the only one with a hand in it. The band needed something efficient for THEM, and it came down to one thing: abstract. So, I succeeded in the fact that I did something that was right FOR THE BAND, and they were happy. I fullfilled half my job, but it wasn't right for MY style. Music videos are weird stuff..

I'll get it righter next time! :)

Why is everyone saying it was great photography - it was terrible. The compositions was not great, as in it didn't really take much imagination, the whole look was too digital and way too soft. Sorry, but no, it wasn't that good.

Yas,
Could you perhaps give me more specifics in an email: Ariella5353@yahoo.com
Would appreciate it! If you're saying its 100% terrible, I'd like to know why. Don't know what you mean by too soft either.
I appreciate criticism, and I really look into but I would appreciate it more if you explained yourself.
Go easy, I'm only 19. I need more experience, but I love this board for giving me the most feedback.
Thanks all!

I just watched and think it's a good job. There's some nice shots in there.

The "story", if there is one, doesn't come through to me though. It comes across as a stereotypical angry band video. I don't connect with the band.

But, again, the first portion of the video is interesting and has some nice shots. The location/building adds enough character that it provides a good backdrop.

My recommendation would be to bust out of the typical angry band video look. Look at some of the works of Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Jonathan Glazer, and others.

Keep up the good work.

Hansk...interesting comment. I'm very curious as to the specific types of shots and lighting you think might have helped the viewers connect with the individual band members in a more emotional and memorable way. I'm working on a similar project now, and this issue is at the top of my list of things to think about. heh.

Thanks ahead of time.
