It can indeed use cinema lenses. You just have to get the PL mount.

OK cool, I was purusing their site and only say lists for SLR lenses, didnt see anything about a PL mount, which is what I was looking for.

Good thing to know...I like what I've seen from the M2.

the m2 uses slr and cinema lenses . zooms of a given aperature, say f2.8 are the same as a f2.8 prime; they pass the same amount of light.

Thanks. But how much are they? Or is this more of a rental-type piece of equipment?

Rental gear.

You have Fisher and Chapman as the big ones, and then Panther as lesser known maker.

I actually like Panther a lot. I used the mini and the super panther dollies in college.

Like I said in my other reply...great to know. I am still very impressed with the footage you and the other member shot with it. Stuff looks great. I just didn't see anything on the PL mounts on their website right away.

Offload MXFs to delivery drive

Eject P2 and format in P2 Store

Check random files in FCP for integritiy.

That is so gnarly.

Awesome

Believe it or not there are a couple places here in STL that have Fisher dollies... I saw the 11 on there and I thought that was a serial number... "Cool... you guys got one of the low numbers so it's probably worth more!"

On a serious note the guys I worked with said you can't buy a Fisher dolly... lease or rent only... like Panavision cams.

See the little "star" knobs at the center of each wheel? Those are a fairly recent upgrade and to my shegrin I couldn't even buy any of those for my steady-rig even though they had a fish bowl full of 'em next to the dolly.

I'm also surprised that they wouldn't use a Varicam? What's up with that? A buddy and I were watching a StarBurst commercial the other day... kid's friends call him over to a park pavillion and the pack of StarBurst candies convinces him to wreck his friendships so he won't have to share... anyway, the kids are totally popping off the background and the first thing out of my mouth was, "I'll bet they're using a DOF adapter to get that look"... my buddy says I'm an idiot and it's a $100K cam such as Varicam with prime lens... I meant DOF on a higher-end cam... but now I'm not so sure.

It's pretty cool to see an HVX at the heart of a national commercial.

The thing is, once you go through one of those adapters the difference between an HVX and Varicam pretty much goes away. So why pay the extra $? Honestly I've shot the HVX 2nd camera to a Varicam and there was almost no noticable difference when the piece was cut together. Sure the DOF and noise is a bit better, but not $90K better. Not even 20% better. I love the Varicam, I've shot two TV shows with them, but once you downconvert to SD you can't tell the diffrence, especially with a 35mm Adapter.

What was your over all opinion on the mini35? Especially set up, ease of use and quality.

Looks like a great set up!

Also thanks for the P2 report, I will be using the same workflow next month.

I was a little dissapointed actually. It was very hard to get the whole groundglass in focus from edge to edge. Quite alot of field curvature is introduced by the diopter. I already mentioned the light loss which is substantial, and there were times where the occilating groundglass induced a dancing pattern into the highlights. Also the HVXs lens needs to be set to maximum zoom which is not the best for CA performance and you could see purple fringing in some of the high contrast edges. If I had a choice between shooting this setup or the camera alone for real HD presentation I would choose the camera alone. But for SD downconversion or shooting DVCpro50 this is a sweet setup.

I will be testing some other 35mm adapters soon, both for myself and for some of my consulting clients.:)

I think you will find that the M2 performs much better and at 1/10 the price . pretty cool.

I see that you are using the same SONY monitor that i bought very cheap. Is it really strong enough for field work? How did you set it up?

Here is my question regarding on set monitors...

Don't you find the LCD to be rather dark looking? And a CRT, like a 9" sony HD field monitor, to be more bright and accruate (when calibrated to the HVX's bars?)

That monitor is not for CC viewing, It's for playback and some limited client reference.
Although I did calibrate it and it's very good for the money. It's no replacement for a real production monitor. I like the Pany BT-LH900 myself.
