Want some more frame rates?

On PAL camera, puttin 14, it told 24Frame on 720/25i...

Francko

There you go... 24P on PAL!!!!

But ntsc has 50p, so, it is still, in my view, a very usable cross signal camera. (it has plus 10 frames for slowmotion!). But I like my Pal camera!

If these framerates are possible, how come panny didn't include them as options?
Because they're not done and tested. Jan told us way back: every individual frame rate has to go through a thorough, detailed testing procedure. They have to verify that it works in all ways at all times with all the recording methods and the firewire streaming and the downconversion to DV tape and all sorts of things. And having been involved in software development, I can testify that quality assurance is a real bear.

So they selected as many as they felt they could properly guarantee, and still make their release date.

So what I speculate is that the programmers on the HVX set up the basic infrastructure for the various frame rates, but they only went in and "finished" the ones that are officially supported. I would imagine that future firmware upgrades would probably unlock and certify some of these (hopefully, someday, *all* of these) but until then, we're getting a chance to sneak-peek 'em.

Even so, I'll still say: 50 on the US version isn't going to be 50.000, and 24 on the European version isn't going to be 23.976. It's not gonna work that way. From all I can gather, the camera would need two crystal control modules, one to support the US 1000/1001 frame rate difference, and the other for the European spot-on frame rates. And the hardware just isn't there. So -- good luck, but don't go expecting these frame rates to enable any sort of cross-territorial compatibility.

Yes, Barry, I'll still shoot my short in 25p (I'll have to go 1080:25p) due to the lack of 720p50 support on FCP, but the conversion from 25 to 24p is a non-issue in HD land. Its done realtime by some decks, like the sony hdcam and hdcam sr decks. Just go to a post house and ask for a conversion from your dvcprohd master.

In the meantime, I'll have my 25p dvd ready for distribution and film and video festival preview. Its a non-issue whatsoever. And there's no audio recorded in 24p in the PAL camera (I believe 50p in NTSC is the same).

Well I know that this info has changed one of my friends mind in saving up the money to buy the vari cam. I know you can't really compare them but the only thing he was hung up on is that the frame rates could only go to 12. Now you can go all the way to 2 I think that is good enough for him.

Just set mine up and did 3 Frames per second, but my 4 gig P2 still ran out on 4 mins. What am I doing wrong?
You're probably in one of the "over 60" modes and not in 24pN. You must be in the "native" mode to take advantage of the space-saving capabilities of non-base framerate recording.

Any idea on how long a process like this might take? Would it be any incentive if HVX users let Panasonic know they are VERY interested in Panasonic certifying these? Seems like one more more huge feather in their sales cap....

Thanks that was it exactly. Trouble now of course is that no PAL user can take advantage of this at the moment.

WOW, 2 FPS with a 350 degree shutter, very cool.

I know this is all not blessed by Panasonic, but it would be nice to know what the worst possible thing that can go wrong.

Having a p2 card become unreadable would be worth the risk if one could just re-format it. Having the CCD blow smoke would be another story....

The amount of work to test each mode is huge, but if in a future firmware release if Panasonic could add (check and allow) 2, 4, 6, and 8 FPS; it would be a very nice addition. Until then, Jan, please let us know what is the worst case risk of playing with these modes...

CCD should be fine, its not like we are going faster, we are going slower. The same stress on the CCD could be done normally by slow shutters.

The only thing that I could see go wrong is if you mess up the text file and enter the digits in the wrong place, which i just did... I just spent the last two hours trying to break the text file, and the camera is smart enough that if it sees a bad text line it just ignores it, and resorts to the default settings. Plus, you of course can initial the scene file in the menu settings to reset the scene files to the original state.

I really don't expect Jan to comment on this. I mean, the only possible official comment I could see coming from a company official would be "don't do it, we only support what's officially released, anything else is at your own risk."

Somebody come up with a hand crank interface to get your own frame rates. I want to go old school!

Has anyone noticed the little plate on the lower part of the chassis? If you unscrew it and remove it, you'll find the proprietary HQHD output connector which enables the camera to uprezz streaming footage to 4k. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I did notice that plate, and there is a quite interesting connector there. I don't know what it's capable of, but I'd love to see what Juan could do with it...
