Want some more frame rates?

How the heck did ChakaMonkey figure this out?

Apparently the scene files aren't that big.
It was only a matter of time before someone poked around and thought, "hey, what would this do?"

Out of curiosity, how dangerous is this to try? As in, will I just risk messing up my footage or could my camera explode?

Barry, were those shots from your own HVX? Have you tried this out personally?
Yep.

It is another thing to cause irreparable damage to the camera!
Agreed. Which is why I say: caution, caution.

I played briefly with many of the frame rates, but the only one I shot any extended time in (four minutes or so) was in 2P.

Frankly we don't know. I can't fathom any irreparable harm coming from poking around with it (which is why I went ahead and did it) BUT: I was a software programmer, not a hardware engineer. Maybe there are things that could go wrong. I don't know.

Barry what were your exact settings for the shots you showed? (other than 2fps which i got to work wonderfully)

now all we need is a hack to flip the image for 35mm adapters. Good luck with that one though. I think the only ones that know the HVX well enough to do that are the engineers at Panasonic. *wink-wink*nudge-nudge*hint-hint* :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

... but what if 12, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 30, 32, 36, 48, and 60 just aren't ENOUGH?

Wouldn't you like more?

Panasonic could have put a frame rate of 22.6177829327fps for all I care.. but how about putting in the relevant necessary frame rates for worldwide use like 24P/25P & 50i/60i TOGETHER on the same model????

Or is that being too sensible?....

I did 2fps with 350d shutter and it worked great!

Man, I couldn't imagine owning the HVX without the benifit of this forum.

Hey, this is all very COOL!. Can't wait to get back to my camera (damn jobs on the road!)

My question is - how does that affect the image you can see on the LCD/EVF? Does it brighten up when you shoot at 2 fps? It's about 3 1/2 stops difference from 24fps (assuming a constant shutter angle), so I'd expect it should. When shooting at 12 fps, I noticed considerable "jerkiness" in the display during shooting (of course, replay is silky smooth). Can you still use zebras and all that stuff?

Barry, can you comment?

[OT] really, but nevertheless:
If you are talking universal PAL/NTSC cams (it's not just a matter of frame rate, you know), then Sony <cough, cough> might be your friend; they are about the only company that has been pioneering in this field. Even years back, you could buy a relatively cheap DCR-PC100 or DCR-PC120 and it would play back PAL or NTSC; they even allowed for RECORDING in the opposing format, albeit a bit funky at times.

So, yes, eventually we WILL have universal cams I am sure; Panasonic chose NOT to go with this [yet!]; but I wonder how much of that decision is coming from the marketing department, and NOT the technical dept! :)

ADDED: by the way, Sony didn't/doesn't do this out of kindness, they did/do this PAL/NTSC thing to save dough, as they could/can build just ONE universal unit, hence lower production costs.

This is great news, Barry!!! Fantastic! I had actually seen the post from Chackamonkey and was intrigued to see if it worked, but I was expecting someone to try it out :)... And it works ! Thanks Barry!

How do you create a Scene file for the sd card? Any particular program? How do I do that on a Mac?

what is 350d? mean and how do you get that? oh and to create a scene file you do it on the camera just to to menu 8, and write yourself a scene file!

I'll try this immediately. Thanks, coolguy007!

EDIT- In 8 menu, theres the option to read and write. I select write, but it doesn't give me an option to mess with the settings! do I have to do this on the PC?

Ok, it works!!!!!! Everyone, talk about value for money... This is FANTASTIC! And I was expecting to see such things only in the HVX200a upgrade... Now I'll definetly do some night shoothing with this!

However, for fellow PAL users, we are missing the "above 50fps" frame rates. its a shame, but, hey, I'm happy :) :) :) !!!!!!!!

350d is 350 "degree" shutter.

You set it by going to the SYNCRO SCAN menu under the SCENE FILE menu. The camera has to be in FILM CAM mode as opposed to VIDEO CAM in order to set this.

Then press the + or - shutter speed select buttons on the outside of your camera until you see 350.0d (or whatever value you stopped at under SYNCRO SCAN when your finger got tired from holding the button.)

This gives you the slowest possible shutter to create the motion streaks like in Barry's examples.

If you didn't do this, I think the slowest shutter speed you could set is 1/24 second meaning no cool streaks at 2 fps.

Also, you're correct, the Scene files are saved in the CARD FUNCTIONS > SCENE FILE menu.

If you save in the SCENE FILE > SAVE/INIT menu, is is saved to the camera's internal memory and not to the SD card.

Yes.. thanks S.Monkey and Barry for exposing this little hidden secret.. the damn camera gets better and better everyday.

I want to make this a big article, but since its kinda in the grey zone, it just wouldn't be right... untill it gets an official stamp of approval.

so as barry said, experiment at your own risk.

YAY!!!!!!

This is great news..!!!

I love you all more than heaven !!!

Thanx guys, now time for some nightvision timelapse madness out my window!

P.S. If anyone knows how to unlock the Microwave feature, please PM me
