I got tired of copying my P2 cards to my reels folder, renaming the enclosing folder, deleting, and then unmounting etc. (life's a ***** in the tapeless world..). So, I figured I could use the automator (which I've never used) to do it for me. And it does. Really well. It reduces my P2 copying time to nil. It takes about 5 minutes to set up on your machine but then it saves much time.
how it works:
I put the P2 in the slot, and invoke the little app I've created and the script creates a new folder in my capture folder with a new sequence number, copies the P2 files over to that new folder, deletes the P2 once the copy is complete, and unmounts the P2 ready to use in the camera.
it looks like this after 5 offloads (the little automator app is below the P2 card)
I figured others could use it also, so I've posted it for download (disclaimer: test, test, test it and don't pm if you trash your masterpiece. No warranties. no cost. no support. no promises).
(and it's customizable so the naming can be date, or client, or both, and it can duplicate copies to multiple locations, get your coffee, whatever)
step 1: download the custom actions:http://www.4zoas.com/hvx/actions.zip and place those in your home directory->Library->Automator (that's a folder...all 3 custom actions should be in there before you do anything. NOTHING WILL WORK WITHOUT THESE. They just need to be in that folder before you launch the workflows.
step 2: download the workflows: http://www.4zoas.com/hvx/workflows.zip
there are 3 workflows:
-P2copyWorkflow is the uber-flow: all steps described above.
-P2delete is just that. Just deletes the P2 card. no muss, no locked anything, etc.
-p2deleteEject: deletes and then unmounts the card.
step 3: once you've downloaded these, open the workflow in automator (bundled on all macs). Set steps 2 and 4 in automator to whatever naming convention you like and whatever location you like (basically create a folder and select it in these steps). Save the workflow AND THEN do a SAVE AS and save it as an application.
And, if anyone is familiar with automator and can use this and make it simpler, better, please share it back to me. I'm no automator/script dude. I just wanted a way to offload and eliminate human error (mine) in the thick of shoots.
also, it seems to speed up copying time...though I haven't really tested that objectively. It might just be that I'm not sitting there watching it copy going "come on, come one, come on"
