I guess someone had to be first . . .

When I received my HVX-200 Rush was still working at EVS. Found my P2 cards at LERRO, drove over and picked ‘em up. Now, after reading posts about “the noise” until my eyes bleed, I’m ready to get out there and find out for myself . . .

Oh Sh*t . . . WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!! The picture looks cool but what the f* are those “bugs” flying through every few frames? Ignorance is bliss—I just kept trying different settings (and all the formats) and I just couldn’t get rid of all of ‘em. Maybe if I wait for a r-e-a-l-l-y sunny day I will have enough light to scare them all off . . . wishful thinking. Everything had noise on it, not just the dark places.

Test, test, test, test . . . seems like that’s all I was doing. We don’t need no stinking paid jobs!
Fortunately I had another real issue: Some of the files were showing a red “x” on them and while I could transfer them to the computer, Avid literally puked every time I tried to initialize the program . . . Edius Broadcast could’nt do much with them either. And to think, I had nearly a full head of hair when this all started.

I e-mail Barry, and I e-mailed Rush regarding the red x’s . . . wanting to know if they had heard anything about this. Both agreed there was indeed an issue and suggested I contact Jan. So I sent a note to her, full of blather, which basically explained pretty much nothing. Jan, to her credit and despite my inability to properly describe the problem, IMMEDIATELY hooked my up with one of the engineers. I was asked to perform a couple of simple shots to determine if the issue could be isolated to one of the P2 cards. No soap, that wasn’t it. (I should say that I have spoken with a fair number of users and dealers over the past few weeks and not one of them has reported an issue with a P2 card . . . or a camera for that matter).

Anyhow, the support folks asked me to send my baby up for an evaluation – that was last week. I shipped it out and I know they received it on Monday. I called yesterday and spoke with one of the engineers who calmly told me that my camera was shipping and that I would receive it today . . .

‘bout 2pm the UPS truck pulls up and out hops this smiling guy with the same box I sent off last week (I suspect he may secretly be an indie filmmaker and that he knew what was in the box). Anyhow, for the past 7 or 8 hours I have run the camera through every single test I can think of except maybe water torture . . . Results?

Oh man, am I ever glad I bought this camera!!! I can hardly wait for the sun to come up tomorrow so I can do it all over again.

My wife wondered why out of all the HVX’s that are out there -- must be at least 20 by now, right? – sorry I just couldn’t resist that one . Anyhow, that’s not the point. I know someone will probably say, “well, they were just doing their job – that’s what they’re supposed to do.” Yeah, I’ll go along with that, but only to a point because I have had very different experiences with other manufacturers of big ticket items.

My point is (something like) this: I e-mailed and got a response the very same day. In fact I also got an e-mail from the engineer, and while it was late that day, he both called and (because I wasn’t in) e-mailed me the following morning. I have no less than 6 e-mails and 2 or 3 phone calls from Panasonic. And I have my camera back working properly . . . all inside of a week working time. The speed with which my issue was handled is unparalleled, the level of professionalism was “over the top.”

Most of the time bad news travels fast. Maybe this is an opportunity for good news to share equal footing . . . I could not be more happy with my experience and the service provided by Jan and the engineers. Those bugs/artifacts/noise/whatever that was is completely gone. There are a lot of businesses out there that have become adept at repeating slogans (like, “Service after the Sale”) Jan, Panasonic, and their support team actually deliver what many others can only promise -- I thought maybe some of you might want to know that.

Thanks Jan!

I love reading something like this. It's great to see someone treated right and then share their story. You're right, usually we only hear the horror stories.

Thanks for sharing.

Btw, I also get this red X footage, but its when on the same P2 card i switch between 25pn and 1080i or 25p normal. I think its me thats to blame, but mabe its not. Could u tell me what panny told u , and if ur having the same X's now. Try recording for me 720p and 1080 right next to eachother mabe on the same card.

mabe this is a faulty one, not sure

this post is like an episode of Seinfeld. It was funny, entertaining, and deft...and also like a Seinfeld episode, it's about nothing.

looking forward to more of your posts. (seriously)

Well it is refreshing to hear this report. I love my hvx/ p2 store and have enthusiastically supported the products at every oppotunity. However, I have found Panasonic support as far as good documentation and the functionality of their web site lacking. If it where not for this web site I would have been screwed at least twice. At one point, Out of frustration with my p2 store, I emailed Jan and got no response. Panasonic has a lot of room for inprovement in my book. Having said that , I could not be happier with the equiptment.

I had a bad board which they replaced. Nope, no red X's now.

If, however, as you have pointed out, you shoot in one format and then change to another you will not be able to play anything other than those shot in the format you are presently in. To play the other files you simply change back to the format you shot them in.

Hope this helps (even if it's about nothing), <g>.

Good to hear. Same feelings here. My Panasonic rep, (not sure if I can give his name), did wonders for me twice. Treated me like I was NBC buying 100 units.
For me, it's the simple things like taking care of the customer! Sad how strange this feels. :crybaby:
I'll check if I can give my west coast reps name. I'm afraid he'll be slammed! :)

The Red X is there on clips that it cannot play. It cannot play them if it has been switched to another mode. If you switch back to the mode in which you recorded and they still won't play you have a problem. I know initially there is a lot to work with on this camera and frankly I too some times get lost if I havent played with it, but keep working with it and it starts to consistantly make files that it won't play back, contact Panasonic. I say that as I am about to leave my office for 2 weeks(NAB).

Thanks for the kind words dgregenthal, glad we were able to help.

Best to all,

Jan

Huh??? That's not him? ... Trickery!!

Don't be fooled. Everybody knows dogs can't talk with their mouths full.

Great thread--it's good to hear that Panasonic was so wonderful with you. Makes me sleep all the more restfully.

Great post. At first I started to have a yet another pre-purchase heart attack. But like every other coronary inducing thread, I saw the problem was resolved and that once again the HVX is the right camera to get. It's good to hear that even if I do have a problem with the camera, Panasonic is responsive and will get it taken care of.

I like the good things I've been hearing about the HVX200 now that we've gotten out of the inital bad news stuff. Good to hear everything worked out great and that your camera works properly now.

Can't wait to play with an HVX200 at NAB and see what all the fuss is about!

So what happened . . . the much-talked about HVX200 low-light noise/artifact issues just completely DISAPPEARED???

As I attempted to describe (but may have failed is writing what I was attempting to get across), I had some pretty significant artifacts before the repair. They were all over the map, not just in the darker areas . . . extemely noisy is how I would describe it.

I'm not overly technical (which is not a plus) but, as my main issue was corrupted files -- some of which were unrecognizable to ANY of my software (and in fact it made the P2 viewer crash). The remaining files were of various quality levels -- some total crap, some pretty nice but ALL had at least some noise and artifacts. I asked and was told they replaced a board . . . that's really all I know.

I am taking the liberty of "guessing" that in the process of replacing the board which resolved my corrupt files issue, it also resolved the horrible video I was seeing in the files that were at least readable. I am certain I can still achieve a certain level of noise without working at it too hard, so if I gave the impression or mis-stated the case please understand I had only one reference . . . my camera before the repair, and my camera after the repair.

I think I pretty much deleted all those files by now but if I run across one I will post a grab so you have a better picture of what I was trying to describe. The main point of my original post was to have been the phenominal support I received from Panasonic . . . which will go a long way (with me) in regard to future purchase.

Best!

Please keep in mind that depending on where you are, your service center will either be in California or New Jersey. The dividing line is the Mississippi River. But you will always have to call first and let them know it is coming and what the problem is. Sometimes it can be resolved without sending.

Best,

Jan
