Film Feature this Summer

My partner and I will be shooting a major project this summer, we will be sending our film to major film festivals such as Sundance. Would you recommend selling my Canon Xl2 and getting the HVX200 or the JVC HD camcorder? I am looking for a vari cam and also a Hi-Def camera. I will sell my Xl2 for around $4,000. The additional money I will get from working at WB this summer. I still have time to decide but I really want to know what my best option is.

Thank you very much
Any help is appreciated

Good luck getting $4g for your XL2...I'd venture to guess they are more worthless then when they first came out.

As for the rest of your post...I don't really understand your question. Are you looking for a Varicam or a HVX, or both?

Be a little more specific.

I'm shooting two features this summer on the HVX. I think it's a fantastic camera for low/no-budget indie narrative feature work. If you can afford a Varicam, I'd definitely shoot on that over the HVX --- no contest!

But your "best option" is to research all of the cameras in contention, consider your workflow, budget, the various features and prices of the cameras and make an informed decision based on what YOU think would be best. Most of the people here are HVX fans, so you're obviously going to get a lot of positive feedback about the HVX here.

There are already a lot of great posts here about the various cameras. Do a search and keep the Visine handy --- you'll need it.

I looked at all the options for my feature that I'm shooting this summer as well. Panasonic, Canon, Sony, JVC... and I chose the Panasonic. I like the workflow, 24p, variable frame rate, just so many options and the picture is fantastic! I don't think you could really go wrong with any of them, but the HVX200 is the strongest overall package.
