new clerks 2 trailer

Kevin Smith has yet to make a GOOD movie. Once you get past his immature humor, what's left. Static camera and poor acting? Other than the inspiration that if a one trick pony with minimal talent can make so can anyone, I don't see why so many seem to Kevin Smith is good. Completely baffling.

I don't see why people can't say Chasing Amy was a good dramadey. Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob were immature, Clerks had some poignancy, but Chasing Amy reallyl was a well thought out piece of work. I mean, there's some potty humor there, but if you guys weren't so busy passing it all off as lame, you might notice he took himself seriously with that one. The Jay and Silent Bob scene in the movie speaks volumes of what type of movie it is in comparison to the other ones he's done. I suggest giving that one a second shot and then saying flat out there's not one good Smith movie.

I must be seeing another trailer...cause the film I saw being trailed looks characteristically unfunny.

That being said...

Although I do hold in respect the Little Indie That Could story of the original Clerks, I still say Mallrats is far and away Smith's funniest contribution. It may be more guy humor, sure - but IMO Jason Lee, Ben Affleck and the rest of the cast were on comically. Plus, the on-going gags in this one worked for me...for example,
"...to **** them some place very uncomfortable."
"What, like the back of a Volkswagen?"

Other than the two I mentioned, his other films were let-downs for me all around...with Chasing Amy being hands down the worst of the bunch.

Back on topic...
The first Clerks had dialogue that was quite oringinal...Clerks 2 (judging from the trailer) doesn't seem to register (pun intended).

What the ****, how am I the only one that likes Chasing Amy? Granted it's not as comedic, but I thought it was actually a serious contribution to films and stuff unlike Mallrats.

But I suppose it goes with a theory i have with most people's tastes in smith's films (especially at the high school level): if mallrats is your favorite movie, you won't like chasing amy or clerks as much.

I'm with you, Spencer. I loved Chasing Amy and I think it's Kevin's best movie by far. I liked Mallrats when it came out and I was still in college. I don't enjoy it much now though. But I still love Chasing Amy.

I actually loved Dogma and still think its hysterical.

I attribute my special connection to this film, to my childhood of being forced to go to Catholic mass ceremonies and bible classes.

First off...
I am all too aware that Chasing Amy was not a hardcore comedy, and as a light romantic comedy (or dramadey as you called it) IT SUCKED on every level.

I take each film I see for what it is. I could easily say that all of Kevin Smith's films are big time disasters (which isn't far off the mark IMO.) Instead, I pointed out the film that I could say somethin' positive about.

I must disagree with your theory, because it goes under the assumption that all of Kevin Smith's films are equally great in quality...AND THAT JUST AIN'T THE CASE. I like Mallrats because that was the only film that worked all around for what it was, and for what Smith was going for with it. It hit its mark, the others didn't by and large. There's nothing more to read into it.

I am still trying to dissect the
...at the high school level...
comment.
I'll let you explain before I jump to conclusions :undecided ...

I gotta disagree with you Callaghan. I LOVED Chasing Amy. The monologue that Affleck gives in the car when he's going after her is a great piece of dialogue IMO.

I know Smith gets a bad rap here, but I like his films. They aren't the greatest cinematic achievements although Clerks was a great independent movie. If you don't like his films fine, but I ALWAYS get a laugh from them...

just my 2 cents

EDIT: here's the monologue i was talking about.

I love you. And not, not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I'm sure that's what you'll call it. I love you. Very, very simple, very truly. You are the epitome of everything I have ever looked for in another human being. And I know that you think of me as just a friend, and crossing that line is the furthest thing from an option you would ever consider. But I had to say it. I just, I can't take this anymore. I can't stand next to you without wanting to hold you. I can't, I can't look into your eyes without feeling that, that longing you only read about in trashy romance novels. I can't talk to you without wanting to express my love for everything you are. And I know this will probably queer our friendship - no pun intended - but I had to say it, because I've never felt this way before, and I don't care. I like who I am because of it. And if bringing this to light means we can't hang out anymore, then that hurts me. But God, I just, I couldn't allow another day to go by without just getting it out there, regardless of the outcome, which by the look on your face is to be the inevitable shoot-down. And, you know, I'll accept that. But I know... I know that some part of you is hesitating for a moment, and if there is a moment of hesitation, then that means you feel something too. All I ask, please, is that you just, you just not dismiss that - and try to dwell in it for just ten seconds. Alyssa, there isn't another soul on this ****ing planet who has ever made me half the person I am when I'm with you, and I would risk this friendship for the chance to take it to the next plateau. Because it is there between you and me. You can't deny that. Even if, you know, even if we never talk again after tonight, please know that I'm forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me, which - while I do appreciate it - I'd never need a painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of.

Great stuff IMO.

Callaghan and his lists... OK, I will bash Kevin Smith from here until his fat ass is tiny, but that being said, I am a fan of his films for what they are and what they are not. I like his films because they are the production of a guy who goes out and makes movies, breaks even, and delivers silly stupid humor that doesn't exist in other films. I like Kevin Smith's films because they are not epic, they don't make you think, and they are nothing more than escapist humor.

I think Mallrats was his funniest film. I think that Dogma was his best overall film. I think Jersey Girl was his best shot film (and weakest story) as well as being his best John Hughes knock off film. I think that Chasing Amy is his best written film. Chasing Amy to me suffers because of the dirrection. Kevin Smith still was not working with a budget, the talent, or the abilty to make Chasing Amy what it could have been. If I wanted to watch a 10 minute scene with no cuts I would watch Clerks, or turn to a true master who at least moved the camera, Rope by Hitchcock.

I think Chasing Amy has a great script, it is well written, and the acting is good. It fails as a film because Kevin Smith should not have directed it.

As a Kevin Smith fan you need to accept the man for what he is, but more than that, what he is not.

You know what would make Clerks 2 really good? Rob Zombie directing it!

Word. Well said. Kevin Smith does his thing, it's his style, and he has done his thing since he started. I like them, some off them, though it must be taken into account that it's mainly some pretty good writing along with Very decent acting and some funny people in front of the camera -- Jason Lee for one. But I'm 22 and I still hate the bastard for trying to be so DOWN with us kids. I can't forgive his ass for Jersey Girl unless I'm really impressed by some good old fashioned writing, monologue writing if need be...and a sequel ain't where I'd start.

Looks to me like once he got the ability to produce a big budget, he started making (and writing) bad movies. He ran out of steam with his iBook or something...and he gets WAY too offended by people (like us) making fun of him on the internet. People REAMED him for calling it Passion of the Clerks, then he pulled it. It was an old joke when Passion was new...let alone a while later. And that is what seems to be the trend, his humor is just falling off, and it's falling off because he's worried too much about how people are going to respond to his sh*t. his talkbacks are through the damn roof...he does what Jay does in the burger joint in Strike Back...all the damn time. Including on like Book 2 of the Preacher Comic Book series.

I dunno...ive been trying not to feel personally ill towards these idols of mine who start to fall off. but it is really damn hard...especially with kevin smith.

Callaghan, regarding the "at the high school level" thing--I don't usually talk about movies to people out of high school. And, me being an elitist amongst my peers when it comes to film, I like to make assumptions about their thought process and admiration for movies. As far as I've seen, people I know love Mallrats, but they hate Chasing Amy. Maybe that was just because supposedly Mallrats is more enjoyable (and I do think it's enjoyable), however, I think it's also worthy to mention that it is the more immature of the films, to an extreme degree. People don't like it for the dialogue or anything, they like it for the parts when Silent Bob comes crashing into dressing rooms. I liked Chasing Amy cuz it seemed like Smith was actually doing something more serious but still including comedy at times.

Whatever, it was my theory and up until talking to people out of high school, it proved fairly accurate.

Top three comedies:
Shaun of the Dead (hooray for being contemporary)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Blazing Saddles

I had reservations at first about this (It is my disdain for the Smith hype) but this looks really good.

I can't stand Smith or his movies. But that didn't look too bad. Then, again, perhaps all the funny parts were in the teaser...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
