DVX100a colors look better than the JVCHD100!

Funny story. A friend of mine was working on a documentary with a DVX100A and had another friend who had a JVCHD100b go ahead and shoot B-roll for him (in SD). We were freaked out that the JVC would look FAR better but, upon getting it into the machine, we found that the DVX100A's colors ended up being WAY more pleaseing to the eye. It really surprised the hell out of me. I know the JVC is more impressive technically in every way but there seems to be something about the way Panasonic knows how to replicate the film gamma curve and film colors and no one else can touch.

Of course, I'm sure if someone who really knew the JVC inside out had shot the B roll (though this guy has had his for 4 months and I have a lot of respect for his technical knowladge) it would have looked far better.

I really think that is one of the DVXs biggest features. The colours are superb right out of the box.

I also have the XL2 and it looks like a dog compared to the DVX footage especially where colour is concerned. I know that the XL2 has more resolution than the DVX, but with the ana adaptor DVX compared to the XL2 widescreen.......DVX still knocks blocks off it.

While the DVX does have some pretty bright and vibrant colors, which is very nice, the HD100 give a more natural representation of color. Also has better latitude, which if im not mistaken a quality that renders the HD100's footage to be more film like.

Not bashing the DVX though. Used to own one and loved it. Wanted something more expandable so I went for the XL2 then once that got stolen I went to the HD100.

I think the 100b replicates the image with even further detail, with richer tones, a better image sensor, better low light capabilities, a little more pixel count, etc.

Panasonic's DVX100best

Over the JVCHD100?? I dont think so.

Not in the footage I saw. The colors looked far more "video-ish" and washed out.

Check out some of Stephens clips, they are fine examples of what the HD100 does. But like most professional cameras you have to work at the image and tweak it to make it look its best. Panasonic, with the Dvx100a has great presets out of the box. Simple as that.

Perhaps. I've seen some great stuff come out of the JVC but have never been too impressed with the colors though. What really surprised me was that there was so little to work with, even when I tried to bring it into some heavy duty CC programs.

I think this referenced the difference between the DVX100A and the 100B. Not the HD100.

Sorry got my wires crossed over the original post. Anyway Ill add: The DVX for my money easily has the best color representation in its class.
