Spankin New HVX Music Video

I worry about the same thing. But I don't think you or I will see film die in our life time. Yes the younger generation is growing up in this super clean look, and with all these CGI movies out there they want the squicy clean look. Now I am not a purist at all. I shoot about 90% of my stuff digital and when I get to use film I like using it. But I am an agruer that Digital is a smart way to shoot. Now when it comes to film there is a very interesting argument. But most people forget that most digital films end up printed on film. So you get the film grain, the dust the scratches the organic feel. So I feel that the only way for film to die is to get rid of the need for 35mm projection. And that is not going to happen very soon. But then I am a big advacite to see more digital projection theaters. It is easyer for people to show there work and cheaper for films to be made. So I look at it this way. There is no right or wrong here. It is two different kind of looks. And what I might like with the grain and all that. The next guy might say man that looks like crap and it is distracting how can you watch that. So I guess we will just have to ecept that it is just a different look.

Sorry for the spelling errors.

Again, the FX or the lack there of should not be the center of attention. As a DP, I am interested in how the story effects the art and science of cinematography -not so much the other way around.

This is very true. and you are right 100% but there is a problem when the effect distracts from the story. in this peace the story is very strong and most of the shots help carry the story very well. But I think that using the same effect one shot after the other takes away from the story. This is a very well done video. And this is all from a my point of view. That dosen't make it right and dosen't make it wrong. I really think that the story and video would stand out more with a more verity of shooting styles. thats all. But as for it not being the center of attention you hit it right on the head.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

So this all boils down to the fact that we have just one more set of tools to use correctly. FX, clean or dirty look we can dial in...but with skill .

I don't think this video relies on a story heavily, though. So I don't think it suffers too much from the "fx". This looks like the regular "eat your meal while watching without loosing focus on the soup" video. There are only a handful of videos that really make my soup the second priority nowadays. Most of them either feature some sort of original or semioriginal effect; a meaningful and interesting story, or a combination of both.

I can't stand Nickelback and all the emotional polished uninspiring rock, but their last video, "Savin' for Me", really grabbed me. It had both, a small story, and a nice effect with the timer above people's heads. I really could mute the TV and still watch it, though. I did, figuratively - while watching the video I completely ignored the music.

right on and well said :) And yes, I will admit when testing new gear I too want to go over board and see what it can do. variety is needed and I agree.

I am loving it. Very true regarding this vid in particular. And I agree with imgentertainment@mac the vid does have a strong story

I didn't mean it to sound wrong or anything. It's well done, but it's not something that stands out terribly. Sort of like soup operas around twelve o'clock PM. You flip through, and there isn't really anything that you can differenciate them by, apart from the actors maybe.

Talk about being spoilt. This kind of fast "MTV editing" has created a new cutting standard for the contemporary audiences. Not that I like that style in particular. I am still a big fan of those endless Kubrick shots :).

If you look at it, MTV has only done harm it seems...Well, maybe apart from the Celebrity Deathmatch :). But then harm is literal there.

I see where you are coming from. Yet, sometimes shooting the mainstream style is what gets you hired back. It’s a difficult plight really for a DP to balance personal style with that of what producers know will make money right away.

Of course. I'm talking purely about the artistic value of the piece. I'm sure many of people here would rather prefer shooting a feature with a big star to doing informercials.

Artistic Views

Hey guys I appreciate all the comments. In regaurds to the artisticness of the piece we really wanted to go for the blown out look, its a constant theme in the video, I have to say that I dissagree with imgentertainment because when you are making a theme in a video you want to use it throughout the video, if you use it here and there its more of a random kind of thing, pluse Jason and I are both huge fans of lens flares. We make each video we do different and this was our lens flare video. If all of my videos had that I could agree that is was over used but thats not the case. We shot this video in two days with a very small crew, using the HVX was so great because of the P2 cards we had the ability to instantly review our takes and delete unwanted clips and reshoot. We had a laptop with us we dumped all the footage onto as we shot. As for the timelapse that was done with the HVX and tweaked in post. If you guys are interested here are some links to some of my other work (Shot on Film) www.demobrianthompson.com/ARCM and www.demobrianthompson.com/PREMONITION in the matter of this whole HD film organic bullshit, heres what I say shoot on the best medium you have the money for, lets not kid ourselves Film is the best looking format out there hands down, but obviously we cant shoot on film everyday unless we have a really decent budget. I have shot with my DVX for the past few years with really good results, and the HVX is an amazing camera and I am super stoked that Jason and I used it for the Brad Coder video, especially the slow motion feature that stuff is great!!

Aquariusdude,

Nice looking piece, I'm a big fan of the look you chose with Jason. The HVX turned in some nice slow motion there too - very filmic. Did you say that you were primarily handheld on this or did you have a stabiliser?

You guys did an awesome job on this. I called in some of my co-workers and we were all blown away that this was done on the HVX. That's not to take anything away from the fact it wouldn't look this great had it not been shot by two people who knew what they are doing. But it just shows how amazing this camera is in the hands of professionals. I personally loved the lensflares and thought they were appropriate and well used. Same goes for the blown out look you went for.
Again, good job and I too would love to see a larger version of this posted.

This really makes me wonder.. If you can achieve a 'tape deck' sound in audio using plugins, how realistic is it to make HD look like film? I'd have to experiment.
The best way would be to shoot 16mm and HD side by side, and then correct by comparison, but I might as well wish I was Steve Jobs' son.

Awesome video. The only real problem I have with the lens flares, is that the onboard HVX's zoom, just like any video camera out there, doesn't have the prettiest of the flares... (I also don't like the accentuated star effect we get from those cameras shutters (or iris's I never know wich one produces that). But you used them for the best of it, and it actually looked pretty good. I loved how they would sometimes tint a little green in your images, it really helped with the color balance. (have you considered adding some post production flares to it? I saw a recent example of it that looked pretty cool - Check out SIMILO, in the scifest thread)

Still, it was rocking. Good job.

I havent seen any post flares that looked really good, but Ill check out that link and see. I like to avoid using computer generated effects they never really look that good, if I can stay practical thats what I try to do.

The lens flares in GenArts' Sapphire plugins are amazing. I think they were used in the Yeah Yeah Yeah's video for "Maps". Nice and organic looking.

Hey We took the HVX for a test drive and shot this music video for The Brad Coder Project. Take a look at it and let me know what you think. We are impressed with the HVX!!!

Perhaps you could BitTorrent the master file so we can check it out in its Full Glory!

Great Job!

Beautiful Video!

Great job. Made the most out of what you had and made it look great.

Look for the John Knoll lens flare filters they are pretty solid if they are still around. They were awful pricey for only doing lens flares but they did a great job. 100% film like.

Hey guys Im not that great with compression, if you could tell me how to do this I would be happy to oblige you, we're just filmmakers the whole compression and internet thing is a different world for us. If you could give us step by step instructions that would be great!!
