congrats on a wicked short dan!
you had some great imagery there, loved your locations. the kid looks like he was made to be in front of the camera. you might have overused the dolly a bit, but i don't agree that a rack focus is necessary. it's often overused. the cc was good and i wouldn't do anything to it. good luck in the festivals mate!
It's hard to add anything new to all of the great feedback you have received so far. I would like to say that you did a great job at composing your shots. Really interesting and beautiful selection.
Only constructive criticism I have is to suggest that you think carefully about the shots you have and which ones help to tell the story and which ones don't. There are are few shots, some mentioned above, that look wonderful but don't move the story along. It's tough, but you should cut them. This is something that hurts because of passion you put into a film. Sometimes that's why you need to let someone else, a good editor, make the call.
Congrats though and well done. Looking forward to more from you.
Excellent photography my friend! the color correction is also very good, I wouldn't change anything. The one comment I have is that the story is a bit long, but besides that excellent work!
The short is excellent. So engaging, we could barely notice the minor "flaws".
Awesome work, congratulations. This is the DVX in it's best shape.
The points to be made:
-It's a pity the plane didn't fly. For me it was very noticeable that it was a handicapped cut, I kept wanting to see the plane fly, and there was always a cut to take me from seeing it. I would reccomend you consider a reshoot, with a working plane. Maybe it's impossible, well sh*t happens!
-Loose the wipe in the beggining. Those things should be banned from the face of the earth. A dry cut in would be much more pretty and would match the tone of the film better.
And I don't know, some stuff in the scrypt seem not very well connected. For instance, the other boy that plays football. Is his function to show the lead character has no friends? it it is, it would work better if he were playing with some friends, in a group. That would cast our boy as an outsider more efficiently, IMHO. Other, he seems to have two objects of passion, his plane and the birds/chicks. I take they are related with his will of flying, of leaving it all behind, of going to a magic place. Cool, but chickens don't fly, so what happened to them? Is the child sad because they're gone? Is he happy because they've grown up? I didn't catch that. Woudn't be cooler if he could actually see the birds he raised flying away? Or if we could see him contemplating whaterver other bird flying away, maybe in the beggining? I think it would shape your main character more clearly. Also, I keep wanting to see more shots in the end, first when he's running to get the plane, build the crescendo better, prepare us for the end, also in the resolution, I keep wanting to see the dead bird up closer (maybe impossible, since it wasn't a true dead bird), his reaction, etc.
Well, those were all subjective, of course, but it's another opinion for you to consider...
Again, cinematography is perfect.
Congratulations! A very good short film!
Great! Kids are awesome, they are like the ultimate special effect.. they give such legitimacy. As contrast, a 22 year guy lends no legitamacy to a film. It just looks like a 'dude' on someone's home camera. Good performance, nice shooting, mood, great, man!
There were some problems - like the overuse of the dolly, the skies looked a bit fakish - maybe just me being an idiot - especially when he's standing over the dead bird?
Some shots where the focus seems to be in the wrong place (one spot that jumps out at me is the beach - hes walking, and we're focused on some grass, not just for a moment, but the whole time.
However, I loved the flow of it, not too long, not to short
I also felt it was wrapped up nicely with the contrast of the dead bird and the fallen plane
