HVX and Avid xpressHD workflow

Help me please....I have a client who is editing on an Avid (don't ask me why) ExpressHD system, and he wants to hire me to shoot 720p/24pN footage on my HVX for him. We would like to edit the files nativly, but the xpress will not recognize 720 .mxf files........I know we could use BlueLight as a work around, but was hoping for something more direct......

Any suggestions out there? (besides dumping the Avid)

thanks

That's what I HAD TO DO.

How are you going about importing the MXF into Avid?

You need to copy them into your Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 folder then use the Media Tool inside Avid to import them into your project.

This works just as Owen said. Import into the MXF\1 folder. Create 720p/23.976 project, go to MediaTool and drag into your bin. Edit.

Michael, question along this same line: does the Media Tool still import the mxf if you create folders other than "1" such as "2" "3" "4" etc. for each P2 card you bring in?

If so, can you go a step further and use descriptive names or is it rescrticted to a numeric cout?

Out of curiosity, if I import them with the media tool, is Avid going to create another version of them (watch the long import bar load) for it to use even though they are already in the media files?

No, it doesn't make another copy of the files. You've basically already "imported" them when you copy them to the Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 folder. All you are doing in Media Tool is using it to browse the online files and associate them with your partibular project.

This is one thing I like as opposed to the FCP workflow of creating all new files.

The Avid works with the native MXK files. No copies are made or harmed in the process.

Then what are people complaining about in other threads, saying it doesn't work with 720pN native files?

Yeah the general consensus seems to be that you either need FCP or Edius. I'm baffled by the confusion over Avid. Avid works!

Yes, you should number each card differently. In fact if you don't, you'll run into problems. I don't know about descriptive names though. I just haven't tried it.

And yes it will recognize over/under-cranked footage just like the rest.

The people who are complaining about 720pn compatibility are European users. None of the editing programs yet supports 720/25pn or 720/50p mode.

Yes, as a European PAL HVX200 user I can now confirm that dragging and dropping your MXF audio and video files in the avid media folder -- then using Avid Media tools to bring the video into your bin works. The audio and video are married with no further work.

However 720 25p/pn doesn't work as yet. Avid sees it as 'wrong format' :)

Avid does can use the PAL MXF files with the following 25p formats recorded by the HVX200 - DV25, DVCPro, DVCPro50 and DVCProHD 1080i - tried and tested :)

It is SO easy when you know how that you can never go back to tape. Seeing all my footage magically appear was simply amazing.

720-25P works fine with Adobe Premiere+ Raylight or Sony Vegas+ Raylight

What's really confuses me is that it seems none of these people have used Avid much. I don't know much about it. I only learned as much as I need to edit my own movies but never got into any of the really technical aspects. Nevertheless, even I know that Avid has been supporting the MXF format for quite a while (wince 4.5 I think). FCP on the other hand still won't read MXF files and they have to be converted.
