Questions about 24p / Advanced / DVD's

I shoot 24p not Advanced and was wondering about encoding. I realize that with 24p the camera makes it possible to preserve the look of 24 frames (Pulldown) while still using NTSC. The question I have is this: with using Compressor when would I want to encode footage as 24p and not NTSC? I noticed this option in the encoding settings. I imagine it is for if I had recorded 24p Advanced, right? Also, if I am shooting 24p is there anything one needs to do with encoding besides the usual settings? I always keep the footage NTSC - how do you go to a truly progressive image for DVD? Do you lose any info when using 24p and not Advanced?

I think you may be confusing NTSC with interlaced. Both 24p and 254 PA are progressive, the difference is the pulldown cadence. A lot to explain so I suggest looking this up (Id just be quoting from Barrys DVX book anyway).

When exporting you select (in premiere) progressive. Wha NLE are you using? That would help someone answer you more precisely.

If you shot using 24pA, edit in 23.98 timeline and encode your dvd as a 24progressive m2v file. If the DVD player is not progressive scan, it will add 3:2 pulldown on the fly.

Funny but I do have Barry's book and have read it through and through. I remember him explaining 24p and 24p Advanced saying there isn't much difference between the two. I use FCP 3.0.4 and DVSP 2 plus Compressor. I edit in a standard NTSC timeline. So what are the advantages of doing a progressive edit and encode for DVD if the pulldown in the beginning preserves the film look one is after? Am I losing frames staying in 24p and not using Advanced? Is it better to use the camera pulldown or let the DVD player do it?

Am I correct in saying that with the 24p there is no visible difference between what I see in camera with both the NLE and final output on DVD?

Thanks and please, keep educating me!

Adam Wilts website is an excellent resource for your 24P questions. I suggest you check it out. If your still confused after reading it, I'll try to answer any questions.

Thanks.

I think I am getting it. Checked out Wilt's site. So using 24p Advanced should really only be used for film transfer and if one is staying on DVD then 24p is the best option - I just didn't know if the 24p was any less a progressive scan than Advanced. What I want to do is set up a system here at home with progressive scan DVD playback and TV so the image is as close to the what I get originally upon authoring it.

On one other note. I have never converted NTSC to PAL but is it really as simple as selecting PAL when either exporting from FCP or when encoding in Compressor?

Thanks

24pa is more than just film. If you want/need 24p results (DVD, web, editing) then 24pa provides the cleanest/easiest way with most editing software.
24p is used more for when you want to keep at 29.97 (tape, etc) but keep the look of 24 fps.
No, NTSC <-> PAL is not a simple task and most editing software is not designed to deal with this correctly.

So where do you think I should start if I need to convert something from NTSC to PAL in FCP?

Thanks
