What's that round, black halo?

While looking over some footage we just shot at a sunny, outdoor location, I noticed a strange, round, black, binocular-type halo in the video. It's visible on the computer, but not TV safe region. I put a circular polarizer on over my clear lens filter (maybe I should have removed the clear filter first?). I also used both the 1/8 and 1/64 ND filter settings, depending on the lighting and a variety of iris and shutter settings. The halo was not visible in every shot. Any idea what caused this and how I can prevent it in the future?

Thanks,

Gary

It's possible that it's a reflection of the dark mounting ring of your filters, or a shadow cast from the filters onto the lens. Can you give us some examples?

It's most likely coming from your filters, whatever it is.

Vignetting will often occur at full wide (Z00) with a clear filter and polarizer stacked up on your lens. Is that what you're seeing? Black in the corners of the frame?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm seeing. If I remove the clear filter and just use the polarizer, are there any settings I should avoid to prevent this in the future? Should I bag the polarizer altogether?

With just the one filter on (any one filter), you shouldn't get any vignetting.

If you have a monitor, or DV Rack, or even a portable DVD player you could hook up to the video out, you can check the framing to be sure.

I wouldn't get rid of the polarizer. It'll be very helpful for getting rid of reflections/making skies bluer. It's up to you if you'll need to remove the clear filter when using the pol or not. You can always just zoom in a touch if you see the vignetting in the corners.
